Hi guys,

Can I buy a sim card at the airport. Please also guide me as to which company sim card should I buy with a package that gives me internet facility to check my e-mails, face book etc whenever I am not in my hotel using Wifi.

In which area are the fish bowls pick ups located and what are the exisiting rates for the night. My last time in Manila was many years ago.

Personally Fred I would choose Globe. I find Smart has more drop off calls and too many subscribers make for a slow service at times IMHO.

in cambodia there was no problem at all, best 3 g ever, really cheap, i recall topping up us $2 every few days for calls and data. good speed and no drops, it's basically because there aren't many users. many people can't afford it. like building a brand new highway and not many cars in it! (i bet it won't last very long).

for those asking which sim to buy in philippine, from what i understand it's really cheap, so you but one of each !

Thanks[/QUOTE]You can buy a sim pretty much anywhere. I had an airport cop offer me one as I was changing money. Always check the convenience stores and small grocers if you don't see a mobile shop. I think the wisest investment one can make is to get a dual-sim mobile and use both a smart and globe sim. Of course a dual-sim mobile is a single point of failure if it gets lost or is stolen. Having two phones, one for each network, gives you redundancy. A smart sim is p40, and I'm sure globe is about the same. The telcos offer all kinds of enticements to their network users that you can use by having both sims, for example smart has a deal for p250 which you can text all networks for 30 days but the 180 minutes of voice doesn't include globe. BTW, if you purchase a sim just before leaving the Philippines, and don't use it, you'll have a useable sim for your next arrival.

To get it, at least back in the spring when I was last there, text: MEGA250 to this number: 2477 (you may want to verify that the promo is still running via the Smart website. Google it). And you can always buy more data if needed.

Obviously you need to have a 250 p load on your phone before taking advantage of the above offer. That brings me to another point, in addition to buying a new sim card (as Hut's suggested) you may also consider buying a load card (even if you don't get a new sim and want to use your old sim); I generally get the 300 p one that Smart offers. If you do get a new sim card and / or a load card, check on the back for the expiration date. Most are good for at least 1 year so make sure you get a fresh one and not one that's about to expire.

One other tip, be sure to turn cellular data OFF unless you are actively using it otherwise you will burn up your data time and / or load. I made that mistake on my first visit. I couldn't figure out where my 500 p load went after a few days (this was before I learned about the MEGA250 deal). Turned out that I was being charged something like 7 or 10 p every 30 minutes for data. At least when I went to the Smart service center in one of the malls the cute girl there was not only kind enough to tell me about the MEGA250 deal, but she put it onto my for phone for free to compensate me for my own ignorance, LOL (2 nights later she also got dinner, a shag and nice tip too; insert big grin).
