They still run the service but its not always the air conditioned bus. A few months ago I went into the Swaggy and bought a ticket for the 3 PM bus up to Ermita. At 3, an old crappy 10 seater van pulls up and the driver tells us to climb aboard. I asked the driver where is the nice bus with the A/C, big seats and TV monitors that show movies. He says the owners are trying to save gas money and don't use it unless they have to. Only if there are more than 12 passengers.
Yes....only if there are more than 12 folks on a 10 seater van!!!! We only had 11 passengers that day so I spent the next two hours sitting between two huge overweight sweaty guys on a van with a broken air conditioner. Did I mention that it is still 500 piso?
The Swaggy management are a bunch of wankers for pulling this crap IMHO. A couple of months later I had the same situation only this time I didn't purchase a ticket beforehand as I wanted to see if the same van showed up....it did. When I saw it I took a P50 trike over to the Dau bus terminal and paid P130 for a ticket to Manila on an air conditioned bus.
To make a long story short...check and see what shows up in front of the Swagman before you buy your "bus" ticket.

Thanks for the tip SJ. Unfortunately I just bought a Swaggman "Fly the Bus" ticket before I read your post. If they load me onto the mini van, it'll be my last Swaggy trip, LOL!
I came to Angeles on the Rabit bus from their Santa Cruz terminal; SC terminal is only a five minute walk to the Light Rail train, a viable option if you are traveling light or making a day trip to manila.

1./ accomodation:
in pattaya you will always get a room without reservation (maybe after some walking around) even at christmas and new year. in ac it is better to book ahead during peak periods, like dec-jan. fortunately many hotels have websites and will hold a room on an email or a phonecall, without a deposit. recently a number of new hotels opened in ac, but to get a "comfortable" room is much more difficult than in pattaya. also, for the same price you get much better value in pattaya, esp. if you don't mind staying a bit off the main roads.
2./ food:
definitely more varied and cheap in pattaya. however, if you just step outside of the tourist ghetto of balibago, in either direction of angeles or dau there are plenty of shops selling varied and delicious food (even pizza) at local prices of 50-60 pesos for a set meal. that's just 40 baht, same as thailand. you can walk to dau and take a jeepney to angeles for 7 pesos (or walk? - get fit!). filipino fare is not as spicy but quite delicious. some even prefer it after all the thai fire-fare (i do).
3./ the local people:
this is a varied lot. while most people in either countries tend to be honest, i believe that a lot more tourists get badly "burnt" in the pi as in thailand. balibago is pretty safe in the main area and during the day especially. this may not apply at night (as you said). the thais tend to have a sense of pride based on their "toughness" that keeps them doing bad things to foreigners, unless they are badly provoked. i don't notice this at the philippinos.
they are more casual and open to foreigners but this can be deceiving and you just have to be alert so much more (see: freelancers as you mentioned before). their national pride will certainly won't bar them from ripping you off at any opportunity. i don't like thais because they are so closed to the outside world, but it also has some advantages as i said. it would be "un-thai" for them to harm you - unless they can really justify it (like if you violate some taboos).
thailand looks dangerous yet it is safer, the pi looks safe and friendly yet it is far more dangerous (does that make sense?). i have been ripped off much more often in the pi (in much fewer visits) than in thailand, yet thailand is so much more of a scary place if you realize just how tough the locals are and how much they look down on you (even when you speak thai). plus here goes the language issue:
4./ language:
rotten hard to learn, but once you speak reasonably fluently you get quite a bit of credit for it from locals in thailand (like moto taxis, restaurants, etc). since most everyone speaks english in pi, few foreigners even try to learn pilipino, so you will always stay an outsider.
they speak english but not so well, really just on basic level, definitely not like most of us. to them it is still a "foreign language". it might be well worth the effort to study some pilipino, to further enhance our experience.
to further confuse you, please note that if you speak thai well in front of bargirls in pattaya it is usually a very bad point (because they cannot cheat you so easily). they seem prefer uninitiated, "innocent" men. i have no experience of speaking tagalog on any reasonable level (apart from "mabuhay and maganda-ng")so please let us know what you think.
5./ the gogo bars:
in ac the music is much softer, making a conversation possible. also, there is much less explicit sex displayed in ac than in pattaya. no naked dancing, unless in a dark corner especially for you if you pay for it. so, entertainment-wise pattaya leads because you can sit all night just ogle the sex-shows. in comparison ac bars are boring if you don't like much conversation (very boring indeed as there is not much else to do or watch). there are some shows now but they are not near as great as in pattaya.
6./ the girls:
in ac they have "real girls names", like "emily, janice, kellie" etc like we are used to, and not like "pon, fon, kung, [url=http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord134][CodeWord134][/url] and poo, etc" as in thailand which sound strange and have no much meaning to us. also, because they speak english better, kiss much more readily and are usually more affectionate and western minded, your experience will be so much more enhanced if you are into gfe or the like. no wonder that so many guys marry them (for better or worse). but for st it is really nice. also, you will have to change your approach somewhat when you come to the pi.
it is more small talk and kindness (even if for the st) and less of a cold commercial transaction as in thailand (i know it is commercial, but it doesn't feel that way). if you come "hard and tough", you will unlikely get the best girls in ac, even if you have the money. i know especially because i am such an asshole that likes just to "point-and-fuck" like in a bangkok massage parlour. usually it works out quite well with thai hos (they even like it), but in the pi unfortunately i had to tone down that approach (one reason why i visit the pi less often).
7./ regular tourists:
this is the main point where ac really excells, as there are no "regular tourists". apart from a few lost backpackers en-route to baguio, basically everybody is here for one thing: the puss-puss. this gives a wonderful sense of comradiere among the guys, friendsips are formed more easily, everyone is more relaxed. and yes, hardly any fights. this is our "own little refuge" from the outside world. the pattaya traffic is really crazy nowadays and the huge tour-buses dominate the roads. they are a danger to everyone, pedestrians to motorcyclers alike. in comparison, ac is relaxed joy. just sitting at one of the open-air bars and watching the world go by at snail's pace in ac is like holidaying on a desert-island, after a stretch of a few weeks in pattaya.

Of course I immediately went back to Dollhouse and struggled with the mamasan because of that non-compliance! However, I fear that this kind of Filipino cheat happens nowadays more or less regularly!?

Before she works as doorgurl, barfine was 1300p, now she works as solodancer, bf is 3000p. I told her I wont pay that. The bars are pretty much dictating the scenary over there and that sucks. So dont get to close with the gurls, cause you know if you dont take her and pay bar, she will go with somebody else.
Well, good that Im a butterfly and have plastic heart. I divide my gf in cathegories and have plenty of them, some serious, some less :D
But for newbies it can be hard.

the swaggy bus i rode had rotten ac. people opened the windows. the "attendant" never once asked anyone if they wanted drinks or anything. she sat her ass down and checked her text messages. during the rest stop i noticed the bus tires had lost huge chunks of rubber. i guess that accounts for the relatively low speed -- many buses passed us on the way. but the high point was the big intersection in mla near the govt buildings / luneta park. the bus stalled out in the middle of this intersection and wasn't restarted untill well after we had the red light.

gud old times, i remember i was allways exited when i left from manil with fly the bus to angeles city, staff was attentive and friendly, they show some movies. nowadays its seems nobody cares a flyin fxxk about how things run.

I've never had a really good barfine at DH. It seems that they try to get away with as much as they can. The only reason I go there is because they are open in the day and the a/c is good. But in general, I think the length of time a BG stays with you boils down to if they like you or not.

Good overall advice in your report Blink. Last time I was in town, my BG wanted me to barfine her again the following day. So I told her I would think about it. Then she sweetens the deal by offering to give me a rebate of 600 (the bars cut). If you like the girl, mongers should try to make a deal because some of them dread showing up for work day after day.
Dollhouse offers a little extra for a big extra price. This is what we call expensive.
"rip-off" is to defraud or steal. I don't think we can say that about DH.
Sorry to split hairs. Native english speakers sometimes use "rip off" when referring to something that is too expensive. Nevertheless, I've never felt defrauded at DollHouse. In fact I went their several times.

Success depends on how much they like you ........and how much they like you may depend on a lot of things, including who was stuffing the hole before you, and how generous he was.
I had an incredible ride from Miss. J when I was in Manila. She needed money for her birthday. After she nearly fked me to death, she caught a bus to AC to go back to work on Fields. She needed MORE money for her birthday. I got an email telling me when she would be back in MLA (for her birthday), but I was unavailable. I don't think I was invited to the Bday party.
Another girl I met had been fking Fil guys at a KTV. I was her first bar fine (at that bar) and she treated me pretty good. "Sorry baby, but it's 3pm and I'd like housekeeping to change the sheets."
I haven't worked out a formula for success. The innocent looking ones sometimes are a lousy lays, sore puss, or OMG great sex. I used to avoid tatooed ladies, but have come to realize that women into self mutlilation - such as self inflicted holes/ tatoos - tend to like it a bit rough or naughty.
Bar hopping with a bar fine is probaly OK for one bar, but if she's ordering real alcohol, better stick to one bar. Drunk wenches can get unmanageable real quick. Of course half-drunk women ....well, you know...

Fortunately I caught it and one of my friends that has worked there a long time took care of it. Of course its just not DH that does this its everywhere if your not paying attention. It happen another time at Lolipop. I have had to stunners at DH and they stated that they only usually are with Japenese or Koreans. They both stated I was cute and of course had my time with them bar hopping and some fun. I have been told that I am at good age at 40 where I am still young but not so young where some 20 year olds just do not get it. I am reasonably good looking which also gets me extra encentive when I go in bars. Looks don't mean a thing in ac. Money talks.
