It sounds like Flamingo is popular these days and so maybe they're not doing everything they can to close the deal on reservations. If it was me, and I was dead set on staying there, I'd just phone them. I've seen reports of non-connection when making reservations there, can't remember if it was on this forum or another one. And also of people showing up to find out they had no reservation (when they hadn't received clear confirmation).

I have never made a reservation with Flamingos I just turn up. Never had a problem and if I did then New York, Asia and Big Luck Hotel are all good alternatives. Don't get to hung up in reservations in Cambodia they would have forgotten about it before you turn up on 50% of the cases anyway.

The same goes for 99 Club, Shanghai KTV and Mega.

Casa, 99 Club, Shanghai KTV and Mega are the in the same mould and staffed by girls who are almost certain to go out with customers, unless a customer are particularly unappealing to the girl he choose, which rarely happens.

The girls there are mostly Vietnamese, and ranked 6 to 7 and is available for USD50 LT. on rare occasion, there are girls costing USD100 LT for long-time, which generally are taller, younger and prettier.

These KTVs cater almost exclusively to Chinese (Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese etc) and therefore, most of the girls can speak functional Mandarin other than Vietnamese.

For Cambodians, there are the X0 Club, X2 and the Rock on the high-end side and a multitude of mid-range KTVs. example.. Champ Elyssee near Lucky Market, The Boss near the Wat Phnom. Difference between the KTVs for the Cambodian locals and the four KTVs catering for Chinese are

1) Girls are mostly Cambodians and speak Cambodian ONLY. (the KTVs for Chinese are staffed mostly by Chinese-speaking Vietnamese)

2) Most girls are unwilling to go out or sleep with clients, unless the girls really like you OR you are regulars and have befriended them for a long time or through special arrangement by someone who is a regular or friend of the girl. It is the same situation with girls in local beer gardens OR with Vietnamese girls in KTV or beer om in Vietnam whereby special services are available ONLY AFTER long-term engagement and investment.

Tahola is right about the girls in the Cambodian KTV being much prettier and classier but only if one is not particular about the girls being fair skin. Cambodian girls are mostly of darker skin, BUT there are exceptions and a handful of Cambodian girls working there that are really good-looking AND with fair skin would be in very high demand as Cambodians, like most East Asians, find fair-skin girls more appealing. As expected, fair-skin girls are more likely to be found in the high-end Cambodian KTV than the mid-range ones.

And the ROCK is BOTH a disco and a KTV. If one ever goes to the toilet inside the disco, one will notice the private KTV rooms dotting the hallway leading to the toilet. Rooms are also available on the second level and is accessible by the stairs beside the disco entrance.

As I wrap up my first visit to Phnom Penh, I have a couple of thoughts for other newbees. First and foremost, hire a driver for the first couple of days to get the lay of the land. That's going to allow you to do and see a whole lot more than you would on your own. But don't blame me when you decide to use the driver for the whole trip. I contacted Driver Sovan Mee on the recommendation of Shamas. He's courteous, relyable, honest, flexible,knows the city well, pretty good English and $30/day. Pick up at the airport (which is nice when you fly into a place like PP), tour of the sites and bars that you want to check out, waits or sleeps in the car while you do your thing, and makes recommendations if asked.

To give you an idea of the possibilities, say you want to visit a whole list of hostess bars or other venues on your first night to find your kind of place. Of course,these places all want you to sit down and have a drink ect. However I walked through a place first and if the vibe was right and the ladies looked good, I'd sit down. Some places you just walk into
and exit two minutes later. If you're relying on a motodriver, its not that safe or convenient. Plus, these bars are farther apart and more difficult to find than I thought they would be from a map. A good driver knows which bars are grouped together and how to route things efficiently.

Here's what I visited on my first night...7:30 to 1 am. Mikado, LeCyree, DV8 Bar, Rose Bar, 104th Bar, Zanzibar, Martini's, Sharkies, Walkabout, Shanghai Bar, and 136th St Bar. The second night was fine tuning the original list plus adding in ....... Heart of Darkness, Casa KTV, Nice Nice Bar, Golden Wine Bar, Happy man Bar, Flower Bar, Zapata Bar, and Colonial Bar. Because transportation was so convenient, I could afford to spend 60 seconds on a look/see and exit if I wished. With a driver, you're out of the car before he parks. You have instant transportation when you leave with your lady for the night. No negotiation every time you change venues and no searching for a difficult to find place. Time is money when you have traveled a long way to get to PP. Plus, when you exit a bar and 6 moto drivers vie for your business, there's something satisfying in knowing your "car and driver" are standing by.

A word about the traffic/driving situation: incredible and dangerous on a moto. Most intersections have no traffic signals and the mass of cars and motos somehow get through an intersection intact. Lighting can be dim, headlights of motos not functional, and bicycle reflectors nonexistant. You have to experience it to believe it. (The night market is lighted by kerosene lamps, not electric bulbs.) I did a lot of video footage of the traffic from the car because it was so amazing.

Hopefully another report on PP to follow. But now I have to pack for Siem Reap. My driver is picking me up in 1 hour!

A huge thanks to Cowboy Brew and Taloha, who do indeed really know their shit. ;-) I think I have a very good idea what to expect in these KTV's now.

Cowa Banga, I'd be game to hear more about these beer girls across the river.... are these beer company promotion girls wearing the uniform of Tiger, etc., pushing their brand at restaurants or beer-drinking places? If so, Vietnam has the same thing. In VN they are generally nothing amazing, though the ones promoting higher priced stuff like Johnny Walker or Hennessy (in nightclubs) tend to be a good step up. Holiday disco is the one up a ways north of Casa, right? If so, I've been there, but never sure what is the best time to arrive. Not sure if I've been unlucky but when I've gone there, the selection and quality seemed to be lower than at Martini. Things change though. This place has been going since at least 2000, same as Casa, when I went there the first time. On one visit to Casa disco (2003?), it had a dance floor that was ALL working girls (and not too many, maybe 10), and just 2 or 3 customers sitting in the shadows on stools at small round tables. Mamasan circled the room to stir up interest.

Xdentx: Since you seemed to spend a pretty short time in most of those places (how else to get your list that long!), you said you would leave in 60 seconds if it wasn't interesting, I guess we can presume these places mostly weren't doing it for you? It makes me curious which ones you did spend more time in. Or which you went back to on Night #2.

As long as it is locked to something or under watch when ever not in use it is convenient. I don't drink too much so I find it safe and romantic to drive my love of the night home on the back.

I would never to that in either HCMC or Mumbai.

Since I'm in SR now, doing exhaustive work, I can only briefly comment on PP bars. The ones I liked the best were DV8 Bar, Rose Bar, 104th Bar, Zanzibar, and 136th St Bar. In my three nights there, I did three LT...all for $50 (sorry bout that). The three came from DV8, Rose Bar, and 104th Bar. Two were Cambo girls with average uninspired performances. The third was half Cambo half Viet and was much more oral and exciting! At this point, I find the Thai and Philippina girls (of Wan Chai HK) much more responsive. These Cambo girls are not very vocal or responsive in my experience compared to other countries. I made a second visit to Mikado on day two and discovered the ladies were without panties. They encouraged me to handle them and that was nice! However, I still wouldn't bar fine them for LT. I hit Walkabout on inpulse one afternoon day two and found a short time for $15. When I got her to the hotel, turns out she was 3 months post delivery and still lactating. Small but very perky breasts. She was rather uncomfortable with the sex and it was an average session. I found the girls at Martini's rather low quality in the two times I dropped in. Sharkey's didn't do anything for me on the two times I visited and I never saw Sophies because I was so focused on LT. I hit Casa and went up to the second floor of the hotel to check out the lounge where about 60 or 70 ladies wait to go to the disco or KTV. Didn't see anything particularly classy or interesting...lower quality than the hostess bars in my opinion. Plus, I have no clue how you would pull one of these girls out of their lounge...or even engage them in conversation. The hostess bars, in my opinion, allow you to chat with the girls while they massage you and otherwise make you feel like a king. The problem with these bars is that they are open until 4 am, so the girls are used to going to sleep at 6 or 7 am. If you go LT with them, they're not ready to sleep when you are. More later.

About Casa, I think you could go in and get yourself a karaoke room, which isn't much. Can order cheapish drinks like beers if you don't want to splurge on a bottle -- and they would bring in a lineup for you to choose from. Otherwise you are allowed to just get takeout -- and I guess they would also line them up for you for that.

I talked to reception and they seemed to be saying that it was my choice whether to get a room and spend time there or just take a girl out. Price I was quoted was $15 for the room, $50 to take the girl home (which I think was for overnight, but not sure). If you just get the girl, it's $65. If that's the case, may as well get the room since you pay for it either way.

Can anyone tell me when the peak tourist season in PP starts to wind up? Booked for the last week of Feb and hoping that it won't be too busy. Was in PP in June last year and was very quiet however, I am aware that this may not be the case in late Feb. Finally, if anyone is keen to catch up for a beer, let me know (will be at Flamingos).

PS If staying at Flamingos make sure you confrim your booking as both times I stayed there I had trouble getting a room despite booking weeks in advance. On one occaision I had to stay at a sister hotel for a night before they had a room available for me. Also print out the email they send back confirming your booking at take it when you check in. Heart of Darkness - After 1am this place is heaving and seems to be the place where all the girls come to after the normal bars have closed. If you havent found what you are looking for before 1am then chances are you will find it here.

Street 63 - Plenty of venues but need to be careful with your money. No real problem if you keep your pants next to the pillow on the bed though and do not let them out of your sight at any time. Loads of nice looking Viet girls but performance varies a lot. I used these venues every day and didnt have any problems as there were 2 of us and we were both very careful about keeping an eye on the wallet. Used a number of different places but the best one was the last one on street 63 on the right hand side as you are heading in the direction away from the morning market. I did not note the cross street unfortunately but it is probably 2 kilometeres past the area on 63 where 3 or 4 places are congregated together.

Driver: If you want a really reliable and trustworthy driver then try Jack. He is very well known and is always outside Sharkeys from 6pm onwards, all the drivers know him and he has a card with his name on it if you are in doubt. The card actually says his name which is Savoeun.

Man, you cannot beat those Vietnamese girls, they are the absolute best when it comes to taking a pounding. They can take it as hard as you can possibly give it and just have a completely passive look on their face. Fantastic

Tom, they always try to rob you at these places. That's no exaggeration, if you do a search on '63' in this thread, you'll see one story after another about it. My own story is nothing spectacular, just caught the guy reaching into the door and grabbing my pants off of a hook they were hanging on. It seems to happen something like 100% of the time. There have also been some stories of customers spotting someone creeping around on the floor to get at pants if they were put on the bed.

Don't remember exactly but I think it was upfront and back in 2003 it was 5$ per shot and maybe 1-2$ tip for the girl. Never been back there since then.

Agree with the others, simply avoid 63 street.

Back then I read all the information and went there with nothing else in the pocket than less than 10$, cheap lighter and some cigarettes.
After the deed was done, they've even stolen the cigs and lighter, and I was happy that at least my pants were still there. :D
Not to be unfair, I have to say, the BBBJ and CFS was pretty good.
