Thai men are very territorial. It may have just been a power play to keep her in line and make sure she knew who was boss and more's the point who owned her. I don't think it has anything to do with jealousy.

The town is quite charming, and the population is largely of Vietnamese ancestry. Many pretty girls here. Delicious Viet food and quaint drinking and dining venues along the Mekong River. Hotels: River View is expensive at about 800 baht, but the room was musty and unexceptional. The Windsor is mid-priced at 400 for air con, and the room was barely any worse than the River View. The cheapest hotel in town is the First Hotel, with 160 baht fan rooms and 300 baht air-con. Finally the Grand up the street from this looked nicer but still in the same price range.

First Hotel seemed the likeliest place to find freelancers, but all I found in the lobby at night were a bunch of dudes. I assumed they were pimps, but they said they had no girls to offer. I also had no luck with the tuk-tuk drivers, who claimed that Nakhon Phanom had no cheap brothels. One did offer me the usual 2,000 baht girl, but of course I declined. Interestingly many of these tuk tuks were very large and low-slung, powered by small salvaged car engines and with squat, low tires. Very comfortable and a huge improvement over the regular kind.

I shall return with my mongering team instead of the ball-and-chain one of these days. Has any monger reading this been to these fabled Lao brothels? Could they perchance contain any Viet girls?

I am a long time reader of this forum but have never posted before. After all the good times that I have had as a result of this forum I thought it only right that I start to post on my findings.

Nakon Panom: I have been here many times on my way through to Laos. Opebo you can indeed cross from here into Laos without any problems at all. The town on the other side of the river is called Thakek. Firstly I can tell you that you missed absolutely nothing in Nakon Pamon, it is a whoring wasteland. I have tried many times to find action there but there are only 2 bars that I have found with ladies and the quality was so poor that I won't waste effort reporting on them. Thakek does have a fair amount of Laos girls available but in the evening only, they are to be found in a couple of bars and discos in the town. Those boats on the Laos side that you can see from NP are floating discos and I have had good success there in tha past. There is also (about 2kms on the main road heading away from the river) a brothel area with about 10 to 12 Cambodia style brothels, each brothel with about 5 or 6 girls, all the tuk tuk drivers know this place so you should have no problems finding it. I have never found the quality in Thakek to be anything too amazing but it is certainly something different. There are no Vietnamese girls to be had here, you need to go to Savanakhet for that, but not really worth the trip.

Udon Thani: A Utopia lost, a real tragedy. I was also going through here regularly on my way to Vientiane and for the first couple of years Soi 3 and Soi 7 were an incredible sight to behold. Full of beautiful young Lao girls and all available for 500 baht each. Lots of girls and mostly very high quality all aged 18 to 20. Alas this scene has now been completely shut down as previously reported and I suspect it may not be resurrected, I keep checking though as I travel through on a regular basis. There is another brothel soi area in Udon Thani and while still operational it is defeintely not worth going there. It seems to be run by a more criminal element and the whole scene there is very uncomfortable.

Nong Khai: Much smaller scene than Udon Thani but not closed down like Udon Thani was. I had hoped the Udon Thani action would migrate to Nong Khai but unfortunately this doesnt seem to be the case, although there are still a good number of Brothels here and all the Tuk Tuk drivers know where they are.

Mukdahan: Total waste of time for mongering. Very disapointing as I had high expectations for this place. Same for Ubon Ratchatani. Really not worth the trip, there are places around but they seem to be full of older and very unnatractive women.

Mae Hong Son and Mai Sai: Very interseting and beautiful places but alas, whoring wastelands. I am sure these places would have been good in their day but its all finished now. Chang Rai was extremely disapointing for whoring as was Chaeng Saen (on the mekong north of Chang Rai).

When I first got to Thailand (I was sent here for work, I am 36 and an average looking guy, and athletic build), I happened across Udon Thani and the brothel sois there and I thought, Wow this is amazing. I started to formulate a theory that all the Thailand border towns and upcountry provincial capitals would have similar brothel scenes and so I set out to explore in detail (my work takes me to many of these places which is very lucky). In summary I would like to quite concusively report that the Udon scene was a one off, most of the upcountry towns and border towns are not worth going to solely for mongering. It can be a great trip upcountry and you can have some fantstic times with the girls, but the action is very few and far between and if like me you thought there may be much better spolis "at the source" then unfortunately this is wrong.

Khon Khaen has a pretty good scene and the Sofitel hotel there is worth a trip in itself. Of all the places reported above, Khon Kaen is probably one place that may be worth a mongering weekend away as an alternative to Bangkok. There really is too much to write any details on the above and I am sorry if it is vague. I will try to post in more detail in the future.

You can get visa on arrival when crossing into Laos (Thakek) from Nakon Panom. It is no problem at all to do this. There is a big hydro electric dam project 2 hours from Thakek with over 300 expatriates working on site. Many of the expatriates fly from Bangkok to Nakon Panom and then cross into Thakek, so they are very used to seeing foreigners there and you will have no problems at all. You cross by a small ferry boat at the immigration point on the river that pretty much forms the centre of Nakon Panom.

You can also get visa on arrival when crossing from Mukdahan to Laos (Savanakhet). They have just opened a new bridge across the mekong here and again I assure you there should be no problems at all crossing into Laos here. I have crossed at both places now a number of times and in both directions and nevr any problem.

If you want to do that trip then my recomendation would be to cross into Thakek from Nakon Panom then travel by bus from Thakek to Savanakhet (3 to 4 hours) and then cross from Savankhet back into Mukdahan, easy trip no problems (although it is a little more grim in the wet season it has to be said).

Savanakhet only has one house with Vietnamese girls and they are of low quality, all 30 plus years old. I have searched this area thorughly for Vietnamese (right up to the border with Vietnam along the old Ho Chi Minh trail in fact) and there really arent many around which is surprising and disapointing. There is some action to be had in Savanakhet, there are a couple of Laos brothels around town and there are 3 or 4 discos in town attached to hotels that have girls readily available. It is worth a look certainly but dont raise your hopes too high. Surprisingly the girls there are quite expensive, mostly 1000 to 1500 baht short time for the better looking girls although the brothels tend to be around the 500 to 1000 baht mark.

I'm happy to report that Udon Thani, though like everything else in Southeast Asia A Shadow of Its Former Self, is not entirely dead.
