I am almost forgot to say how it went.
I was in St.Pete for 3 nights, staying in the Moika 22 Kempinski. I usually stay in apartments (they are more practical in some ways, less practical in others) but this time was in a hotel due to business reasons. You can still get freebie in the FSU but it's not like it used to be. I think it's very possible to still get freebies by the boat load. Try travelling to a smaller city (100,000-200,000) out somewhere east in European Russia or Western Siberia.
