Is anti-Americanism noticeable in Colombia right now with all that's going on here in the states? Or do most Colombians either not pay attention to politics or not attribute it to visitors? I visited Bogota about a year ago and didn't experience anything negative, thinking now about visiting Medellin, but want to make sure it's not particularly bad timing. My spanish is not fluent, only college many years ago.

But that shouldn't come as much of a surprise because Americans aren't generally liked across the globe. The current political landscape just adds to it.

Generally when people have a dislike of a certain nationality it is due to stereotypes, not personal experiences. It is not like a Colombian came into contact with 100,000 Americans in order to form a knowledgeable opinion. It is more likely from some shit they saw on TV. That being said, being an American, what you say has not been my experience in Colombia over the last 20 years.

Besides the few troublemakers out of many, US visitors are generally liked.

And to be honest, I travel the globe and find in actuality, in my dealings anyway, that US Americans are generally liked regardless of the hype of the contrary.

It's the rude, and loudmouths from any country that aren't liked.

It's politically correct to say that we aren't liked, and the current political landscape makes it worse, etc.

The truth is basic, however.

Treat people with kindness and respect, and they do the same.

Americans bring dollars and opportunity for those to make money from American tourism. The trade-off is the people that visit and their customary ways and general etiquette.

I can recall talking to a young lady I was on a date with in Medelland last year and she said that there's just too many American gringos, and that everything is expensive as a result. She also mentioned that she and her friends see that gringos think that they can throw money at anyone and everything to get what they want, and have no game or personality that matches Latino ways.

TBF, most Americans I have come across one to one have been nice enough and seem more cultured and well travelled. But I have definitely come across idiots, especially in Cartagena and Medellín

The value of the dollar against the peso is continuing to decline. Something to keep an eye on. I haven't checked but I've seen headlines that indicate that the dollar is down against other currencies as well.

The high point was November 2022 at almost 5000 pesos to the dollar but if you go back to 2009, it was 2000 pesos to the dollar.

In my opinion, this is do to political actions of the current administration in the Dis-United States of America. Unfortunately it is looking like this an economic shift and the next ten to twenty years are not going to be good ones for the United States Dollar (USD). If something is at an all-time high, likelihood is that there will be a correction at some point before it goes back up again. That is how markets work.

I do not think a woman said this, and here is why. Prices are up in places in Colombia where gringos rarely go. There are no gringos in my apartment complex outside of me, and the rent has doubled since 2022.

If she were looking for a husband, safety, financial security, and loyalty are near universal things women want. Most Colombian men cannot compete on the first two items. They are in a different universe than the average American tourist in Colombia. And if they can compete on safety and finance, a Colombian woman should have no expectation of loyalty. I have met one well to do guy that I would bet was loyal to his wife and I am not even sure about him.

Sure, if she is in a bar looking to get picked up, a Colombian guy has the edge for a lot of reasons, but I do not see a woman talking to a foreign guy about that, and I have never heard a woman use the term game or letting someone know what works with her for one night stands. It is not hard for decent looking women to have sex in bars, and I do not see why one would talk about it. Most Colombian women are Catholic and a one night stand would bring on the infamous Catholic guilt.

As for etiquette, northern Europe rivals the Middle East as the most war torn region in the world over the last century, and here is another piece of etiquette: do not bite the hand that feeds you. We Americans have been paying way more than our fair share for the defense of Europe over the last 80 years (and we really should not be paying anything now), and I am sick of my tax dollars going to support such arrogant, ungrateful snobs.
