No PEP side effects, but keep these tips in mind
I took PEP an year back after a condom slippage during the act. I was travelling outside the country and could not meet a doctor and take it until 48 hours after exposure. It was rather scary one month until I finally took the HIV test and came out negative. Repeated the test again within 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. Still negative! It is great that you took it within 1 hour. You chance of not contracting HIV (in case the girl had it) is minimal.
My medicine I took was VIROPIL. I did not have any side effects during my PEP usage for a month. However there are some important suggestions to follow as per my doctors advice, which I think helped.
- The doctor explained that the PEP medicine works by messing with the replication cycle of the HIV virus. So, it is very very important that you don't miss even a single dose at all! Remember and take the medicine on time without missing. You should make sure that you take the medicine roughly around the same time so that medicine is always in your system without any long gaps.
- Do your regular work and do some exercise. Keep active, walk or jog. I was regular at the gym during that month.
- Eat well, don't starve and don't overeat or get over drunk. In short eat healthy and keep the body healthy.
- Asked me to avoid smoking as it reduces your immunity power.
The difficulty I faced was taking the medicine without family members seeing it. I had to hide the bottle of medicine and take it secretly.
