For example if you are American, tipping is ingrained in that society from tipping hairdressers, to the best buy dude who lugs your flat screen into the car, to even door men in NYC condominiums. European, UK, Australian, Asians, Indians, In my experience are not used to giving tips, usually its already added into the upfront costs and mostly only in restaurants. And its not necessary to tip every service provider like it is in the USA. This in turn will reflect on the way we tip when we are outside our societies. Sometimes, we tip more as we want to enhance that stereotype when we are travelling "Americans are good tippers," which in turn creates high expectations for the service providers. Slowly it will turn into a society where every service expects a tip regardless of the price. In my mind a tip is something that is given if service is above and beyond what is required from that service provider. In a 3 star Michelin restaurant you have to expect nothing less that stellar service, so whats the need to tip? Same goes for well established MP's and Escorts. They built their reputation on their service and if it was beyond your expectations, sure by all means leave an appropriate tip. If they performed what was expected of them then you have paid them for their service. Why more? Having grown up in the States I am so used to tipping waiters, regardless of stellar service. Its almost a cultural necessity over there. I was very surprised when I went out for dinner with some of my Thai friends here in BKK, who happen to be very very financially stable and they did not even leave a tip. They even picked up the coins leftover from the change from the bill. And this was extremely stellar service. The waiter was always on our beck and call. This is the norm here. If we change it over-zealously, then we will have to tip everyone and everything like its done in USA.

Natty tips 300-500 for good service and nothing for poor service, on top of the 800 + 1500. Do you think this is reasonable?
Last December I went to couple of places on Soi 24 or 26 that as I recall quoted me something around 2300 to be paid upfront. When we finished I'd give the girls a tip of 300 for fairly good but not stellar service. Do you think this was fair?
I've always tipped the papasan at the Ratchada soapies for help, but I've never tipped the girl at the desk at the oilies around Sukhuhvit. I tip the papasan at the soapies because the first time I went to one it was with some Thai businessmen and that is what they did. At the oilies I've always picked out my own girl and never asked for help other than to make sure the girl offered a BBBJ and a-level, which I usually determined by asking the massage girl. I never felt the girl at the desk did anything to warrant a tip. Do you think this is right?

LOL[/QUOTE]You mean old git! I always drop baht 150 ($5) for the m'san or p'san and regard baht 350 - 500 as the minimum tip for the lady if, and only if, the service meets my expectations. I usually try to explain , politely to a lady if I am not tipping, why I am not tipping.

Had two occasions were this has served me well, not due to bad service, but due to the fact that the gals I had chosen had warts. I had no sexual contact with them and politely told them what was wrong, showed them in Thai on my phone, and left. Glad to report that both gals took a "holiday" and got treatment before coming back to work. Sadly, one had a recurrence, left, and has never returned.
I think everyone should be free to tip as much as they want. For sure that will make the girl happy!
Also I don't think that will drive the prices up in itself. Prices will go up anyway as everything else based on offer and demand mostly.
That said, I really think is not good for posters her to give rules about tipping. An advice can be nice, but most people make what they write sound like a rule (and if you tip less than that it makes people sound as shit).
Just for the sake of it, I really would like if some of the guys who like to tip (in the 500 baht range) would just try to go to a new shop / girl and try to repeat her a couple of times without any kind of extra tips and see if you'd get any worse service.
I mean, you are very free to give tips to make the girl more happy (or to make yourself feel better for whatever reason). But it is really not needed if the reason is to expect a better level of service. And before not agreeing with me, please try it yourself a couple of time first.

If I am going to tip a girl, I would look stupid in her eyes (and mean) to give 100 Baht.

Once I suggested an amount (a little naïvely low) for all night to a high class Soapy girl, and rather than say it was not enough or suggest another amount, she just hung up the phone and would not accept any more calls. LOL Clearly she could get a lot more than what I thought.
The truth is the amount needs to be commensurate with quality of the girl and how desperate she is for money. Guys who think every girl commands exactly the same money are silly in my view, if they want to make special deals outside the standard arrangements.

And I would rather ip generously for satisfactory performance and not atall for sub-standard performance (my totally subjective standards of course). Mediocre performance does not warrant a mediocre tip.

Years back, when you finished, cashier would only collect 800 and assume you tipped properly the 1500 to provider. Now they ask for 2300 . If you gave the 1500 in the room, she'll then just take the 800.
And yes, I've never paid up front to any shop or girl; always afterwards. Only exception are the soapy MP; some collect upfront, others afterwards.

I think she was from Eden. Who actually asked for a tip. Very strange I thought considering the price for their services. I gave her about 200 I think. She left with it no complaints.
Some people have called me low class, dumbass, smart ass etc etc. If I pay 100 bahts somtam tip I am low class. If someone pays 300 Bahts (less than 10 US Dollars, as said by Paul) he becomes high class?

Give whatever you feel like guys. Lets all enjoy with whatever makes you feel good. Even if I give 100 Bahts for somtam, I am still welcome by the same girl, because repeat business is more worth than one time customer.

I did not say I tip the mamasan / papasan 100 Baht either, only that it was the sort of tip range. It depends on the level of assist.
Your latest post now suggests you would tip the P'san 450-600 Baht for a satisfactory performance. He didn't give you a hand job! I guess you don't mean that either and was supposed to be relevant to the girl.
Your last point. You tip generously for satisfactory performance. That's just you or me. I am sure we are both generous by standards of the mean force. For me she gets what she deserves. Good performance should be rewarded. Others argue she will get more business anyway, but I don't want to a see a good looker with crap performance get same money as a girl with great performance.

[/QUOTE]How much street food will that extra 200 buy? In a USA restaurant if I tip 7% I insult the waiter if I got good service. If I tip 20% the server feels I left a fair tip.
