If you goto blokM later in the night, say after 10 pm, when the freelancer bars are happening, then it might be 1 hr each way on a good run with an honest taxi driver.

Depends a little where your staying of course as well.

I don't think it's possible to answer your Qs. I stated why I like Maribaya, but I should have / could have added that, after 8 or more years, I don't go to Tulip anymore -- and wander over the Mango or Snow White instead. (Both Nestle and Nong were "friends" of mine at Tulip.) I think Tulip has gone downhill, which makes responding to you even more difficult.

I also think that trying to compare Jakarta shops to Bangkok MPs -- or Manila, or Phnom Penh, etc. -- is also pointless. You play the hand you're dealt, and play in the city where you are. If you're lining up a mongering trip, too many other variables are also in play. Personally, I'd go to Bali as a first choice, with Bangkok tied with Jakarta next. And Manila on the list.

I am new to Jakarta. Arrived here to work in mid-June in the provinces.

Been to Jakarta twice for 3 days each time. I wrote a trip report on my initial visit.

(unless you are on the old "Indonesia on $10 a day" budget that was possible 45 years ago).

By the way, backpackers who stay at backpacker-budget facilities (such as Jalan Jaksa in Jakarta) may find it difficult to get working girls to go back to their rooms with them, unless of course you find a girl who's working Jalan Jaksa itself or in some of the lower-end places (such as Kali Jodo which may not be a safe destination for a foreigner / first-time-visitor.
