I think it's very good if they continue building the metro. However a station at Praça Nossa Senhora da Paz seems very close to the station at Praça General Osório. Instead they could open a station at Jardim de Alah.

Jardim de Alah would be a perfect place considering that both Leblon and Ipanema residents would have access to the Metro.

Prejudice can work both ways.

Those that have are only trying to protect their class status, as they feel threatened by the pobre presence.

The protest was about a third planned one, in between. Class prejudice aside, I actually think it is important to protect neighbourhoods, otherwise people who live there stop caring about them and they degenerate. But stopping progress is not the answer. The easiest way to discourage riff-raff, as the hoi-polloi no doubt think of them, is simply to put prices up (didn't the Niteroi bridge start out like that once upon a time?) The rechargeable card is good idea, but it will still need a quantum leap. If they eventually extend the metro to Barra, it hardly seems fair that there to Centro costs the same as Carioca to Central. Similarly you need to keep rich folk out of poor areas, otherwise it creates a two-tier economy.

It won't deter mongers. But expanding Balcony / Help-type facilities in Copa would probably have actually helped matters. I hate to think of loud and cheery mongers asking neighbours in Saens Pena,"Hey man! Is your haw-house in this building?" people prefer to ignore prostitution in their midst (except in Copa perhaps). Similarly Ipanema is a nice place to take your girlfriend or family just now. Without them having to rub shoulders with paid sex workers and people that can't read or write. I am not prejudiced against such people, everyone is equal, but that is not the same as saying a big mixing pot is always a good idea. Ultimately Rio's class problems will be sorted out by focussing on the favelas, not on keeping Ipanema upper class.

Stopped by Balcony Bar last night and noticed that there are now video cameras in the PVC piping that supports the outdoor canopy. Hopefully they are there to help the owner figure out why it took the wait staff 45 minutes to deliver my cold chicken fingers.

While the talent as usual was not that great, there was a girl-next-door blond who was absolutely beautiful and a petite brunette with a body and smile to die for. Both will be easy to find because they are so much more attractive than the other girls without even trying.

This post is nothing groundbreaking. More just filling in small gaps and for folk who already have the big picture and like the occasional extra detail.

[b]centro cheapies[/b] Firstly: in the spirit suggested, of adding the odd casa to Sperto's list:

RUA GONÇALVES DIAS 82, 2nd floor. Rs40 half hr, Rs70 for 1hr. This is one of the streets near to and parallel with Uruguaiana, and only a few steps, so easy to have a look in if you are trawling. Not really very much to look at when I went in. A bar tab sheet as you walk through the door (a bit like the old Casarao, which it looks a bit like only smaller). Central room, quite dark, with cabins leading off. None of the the women available struck me as particularly appealing.

RUA DO OUVIDOR 130, SALA 911. I think this one is on Sperto's list, this is just to add a detail. After waiting for the lift and finding it, I tried to leave within 15 seconds. Small dark hallway, crowded, tiny cubicles leading off, altogether cramped (as if a floor on Carioca 59 had been crushed into half the space). I could see at once that none of the chicks we're to my taste (I don't go for fat, ugly). As I tried to leave, one very fat cow blocked my way and tried to extort money (the sort of entrance-fee-in-reverse scam). There is only one way to deal with that, which is very quickly, firmly, politely, which I did, before the cow could think of her next move.

CONDOMS Bubba's mentioned Preserv Extra, larger condoms available mostly in Copa pharmacies. If you are in Centro and avoiding Copa, there's Prudence Extra Grande. They're a very comfortable, larger fit, feel quite sensitive, maybe not as thick as Preserv Xtra.

CASA BEHAR CAMBIO This place has been mentioned a couple if times as it gives excellent rates. But the directions given maybe just said, I think, near Rio Branco and Presidente Vargas. While this is true, it can be time-consuming if that's all you have to go on as they are very busy major roads that can take a while to cross at busy times. The address is actually R / Branco & Visconde de Inhauma, so you should cross Vargas going north from Centro (4x4 side) and then the cambio is about 50yds further on on your right. If you sit outside the bookshop opposite you can also use free wi-go once you've got the password.

MORE VM NOTES: I wonder if this place could price itself out of existence if it's not careful, but just now it's still like a rite of initiation to some folk and there are still gems and even tolerable cabins if you're very lucky. Some of the best experiences I've had there, as well as girls I've taken for an all-night, have been new to VM and not had time to develop a hardened attitude. But I've also found a certain consistency on casas over the years, not foolproof, but fwiw. Some of the places with the hottest looking chicks have awful cubicles and awful house policies. Those I've found to be decent and honest include:

The first casa on the right as you enter from the meat factory (Sao Cristovao Metro) end. The casa is at the end of a long passage and has a very laid back feel to it. There are a higher proportion of non-doable chicks, but usually the odd looker too. You can relax, enjoy the jukebox, maybe enjoy the barbecue or tv, all without hassle and get treated with respect. A couple of others I usually check out (as they're honest, laid back and no hassle) are one or two at the end of the narrow cul-de-sac street in the north side (next to the U-bend). Also, some yards east of that, is a wide entrance with a few pool tables that goes back some. The middle two bars of the main section have always been ok for some reason. Of the bad ones, I've mentioned the L-shape next to casa 56 that tried to rip me off. I am also very wary of the second casa to the left at the west entrance to the U-bend as I caught someone trying to steal from me there and it may or may not have been with the casa's connivance. Don't take this as gospel. They're just observations over a few years.

I use them when in town also, they really have great rates. Once you find the building, you will see a travel agency as you enter and a set of spiraling stairs to the cambio.

I was in Rio last week and the temptation of the updated Bubba report made me pay up an annual membership fee. Actually I should have done that long time ago, thank you for a great service Jackson, I hope it works as a business and thanks of course also to Bubba for his report on Rio.

So I had some time in the afternoon, did not feel like spending RS400 in the termas, so decided to try a cheapie.

I went to the one in Zona Sul, Rua Tonelero 169.

Take taxi there. No sign on the door, just an entrance. A Brasilian guy just came out, so I walked right in. Up a short flight of stairs, small ante room with nice looking madam (42y, C cup) smiled at me, asked me to sit down. I don't speak Portuguese and nobody there speak anything but Portuguese, but no problem, all sides are willing to communicate with hands and smiles.
