South China - Guangzhou

I'm just back from a 5 day trip to Panyu. I stayed in the 5 star Royal Marina Plaza Hotel. I did not find any reports on this hotel but as I have business in Panyu I had to stay there.

There are so many discount flight to Shanghai from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, I got a cheap flight in oct from Shenzhen to Shanghai on SZ air one way for only 320rmb, why even take the train unless you have too much time on your hand.

It's fun to mingle with other travellers on trains and see the rural areas. If you really do have "too much time on your hands" and enjoy the adventure of travel, it's a great way to go. Trains usually arrive in the early morning, which is convenient for finding a suitable hotel.

Factor in that you save on the cost of one night in a hotel, getting to and from airports, and airport tax.

Also, hard sleepers are ok, especially for younger budget travellers, and considerably cheaper. Beds are on the small size for big westerners.

My last trip from Xiamen to DongGuan was very scenic. That was the night before our dear friend Bill Lee died. DongGuan to Xiamen is not so good because you pass the scenic areas during the dark night.

The longest train ride for me is from Guangzhou to Shaoquan 4 hr on soft seat, it was not a good experience for me as I rater ride the bus, I think flying is not that much more than the train.

Really? After all these years you still haven't figured out the trains in China. We waited all night and half the next day for you after you took the wrong train from Shanghai to Zhuhai and were headed to Zhangjiang instead.

No, I missed my train and took the Zhangjiang train instead, and still made it to Zhuhai. Only 800 miles in the wrong direction, not so bad really. :confused:

it is expected to pose a real threat to airlines running flights linking the cities. high-speed rail has three advantages over air travel: it is more convenient, more punctual and has a better safety record.

Ask any taxi driver and they will all know. Seems to be the only reliable place late at night to find SW nowadays. Usually quality is poor, old and ugly, so it is a total hit or miss and mostly miss I would say, so I was just very lucky on that night.

Yeah, I went back after my post and did pick up one hot chick for overnight for 600 but turned out the LT meant 2q and she did say no service up front. My visit to GZ is finished. The weather was very lousy, almost raining every night when I was there. So I didn't really go out much for mongering.

Went to the Elephant & Castle one night. But soon after I arrived, rain began to pour down. So the place was very quiet, with a few foreigners and a couple of local young couples there all night.

I ended up "re-connect" with a manager of a sauna that I used to visit when I was living here. She has left the business and started her own lingerie shop.
