However this is all subjective. I don't think I could do Cuba that long. After 4 days and an empty sperm tank I am ready to go home to my modern conveniences and toys. For example I would ask my host how much should a taxi to the beach cost. And then I would walk from taxi to taxi until one gave me that price or less. Once you hit the ground you will meet a lot of people and have no trouble making friends. Use your discernment to make connections with people you deem trustworthy and they will have no problem helping you every time you come to visit. For them having the foreign connection is priceless.

It's usually the same price as a taxi, but you know you won't have any problems finding the place and getting inside. How would you contact your hosts if something went wrong without a phone line? In my typical airbnb I already know how to get the front door key and the apartment entrance is a coded lock. But the first time in Cuba (or with a new host) it's always comforting to have them drive you to the casa.

Also always buy a $1/ HR Wifi card at the airport if you don't have a working Cubacel line. At least that way you can communicate with your hosts. BTW, it takes like 30-60 minutes to get your luggage at Jose Marti, so you want to be able to give your hosts real time updates on when you will be coming (or if they are picking you up, when you will really be exiting the terminal).

Most use Whatsapp, some use Telegram. I had several conversations going on Telegram when Badoo banned me. I think one of the gals reported me.

I'll have roaming on my cell plan (it specifically covers Cuba), I'll also be picking up a Suenacuba sim at the airport as a backup. I have a taxi arranged at the airport also (I'm flying into Varadero). My question was really what I can say to the La Nave driver when he calls, as I don't speak much Spanish but want to assure him that I made the booking and I want to go ahead with it. The whole point of me using La Nave is to have the set price so I don't have to worry about the back and forth with taxi negotiations, or getting scammed.

With my hearing and how fast Cubans talk, I much prefer in-person conversations. I think my first question would be, "habla ingles? Consider having a pre-translated script and paste it into your notes, and you just wait for him to be quiet and then prattle it off and hope he understands your accent.

As many have reported here, the street hawkers in Havana are aggressive. Imo, they are as annoying or worse than the street hawkers in Boca Chica, DR, and that place is annoying as fuck. I don't get tours ever, but I'm curious if tour givers must be licensed in Havana. I suspect something else was going on with that old dude hawker and your female guide. In any case the old dude sounds like a real scum bag. Any of you Cuba vets have an idea?

Thursday arrival. Arrived mid afternoon, got checked into my 3rd floor Airbnb on Muralla and Compostela.
