Having only had mediocre experiences in Shanghai so far I had an unexpected bit of luck during my visit last week. I arrived quite late at the Kempinski Hotel around midnight. As I checked in I saw a girl sitting in the lobby obviously looking for customers. I didn't pay much attention and went up to my room where I realized that the desk clerk had not given me back my credit card which they had taken for the deposit.

As I went down and collected my card I noticed that the girl was still sitting there. Visited a place near a fly-over (Over Bridge) and a wine shop, on the way to the bund area, exterior doesn't speak what's on store. Went to the 3 Road floor. Most time in Shanghai no hotel has any problems with bring girls to your room, really no one care.

But sometimes there are days (or even 2 weeks) where they are "advised" by officials to be a little bit more careful (for example most time around official holidays like new year or the national holiday in autumn), than they will ask the girls to register to the room (which is also not a big deal, but many girls don't want that or don't carry a passport, so they will leave).

There are also every year some "red alert" days, for example last year when the international conference was hold in Shanghai, but also when the communist party is doing meetings in Shanghai. In this days, many hotels will not allow to register a additional guest to the room after a fixed time (I think the official rule is 10 or 11 pm), after that time than nearly impossible to bring someone in.

While the conference last year they even start to check the girls handbags for condoms, to find out, if they come over for some "special service".

But to come back to your question, matched to the above "phases", nearly all hotels change their behavior together, so it's not a big difference where you stay. If you are shy or afraid about requests from the counter or lobby staff, over all I would recommend to book a suite in a 4 star hotel instead a room in a 5 star hotel, because 4 star hotels just's don't have enough staff to care about people come and go, so here not even anyone will "look at you", if you come down to pick her up at the elevator.

Being persistent in trying DATY has worked for me most of the time. For all of you who plan to visit a sauna these days, better check if they will be in service or not. We just made a round call and at the moment half of all the clubs we are in touch with are temporarily closed because of the "windy weather".

So if you have a way to check, if your favorite place is open, better do it now, before you take a long taxi ride there! For the next 7 days this could avoid to waste time and money on the street.
