phone: telephone services are very inexpensive in kiev, so you should have with you an unlocked global phone into which you can put a sim card from the local telephone companies providing pre-paid services, such as kievstar or mtc. there are machines for topping up your minutes all over the city (in the beginning you will probably need someone to show you how to use it to top up, because all the touch screens are written in russian) , but even before that you need a sim card and to be sure your phone is working. many of the downtown streets are crossed by pedestrians by going down the steps near the corner and crossing through the passageways that are constructed underneath the streets and intersections. these passageways have many kiosks and stores. you can buy a sim card at many kiosks all over the downtown area, especially in the underground street crossing passages. but if you're not a technically skilled person, and would like to go into an actual kievstar or mtc store where you can get assistance, and make sure everything is set up and working properly, and get information about rates, and inquire about a data plan or package, etc. i saw a kievstar store on bogdana khmeilnitskoho street just at the corner of its intersection with khreshatik, as well as an mtc store a little further up bogdana khmeilnitskoho street.
