There is simply no reason to visit Malioboro these days, it reminds me of the places I used to visit in desperation when I lived in Australia, where the lady would don surgical gloves to examine your member under a bright light prior to getting down to business, which was always perfunctory and without any sense of fun, that's not far off where Malioboro is headed.

There are a gazillion better and cheaper options on the Jakarta market than that place.

I think so based on the looks, attitude and performance of my girl and also considering what average looks and mediocrity of service OS is reporting for 800,000 idr. It seems like there are two solutions to this dilemma: pay up and take the better quality Malioboro dancers and have great time or ... where is "your usual haunt ?" OS, with "sweet as pie" better looking girls for 200idr. ie. go somewhere else.

As mediocre as the service is at Malioboro most times, it is far superior to what you get at Hotel Travel or Hotel Classic. The price is about 3 times as much, but I prefer Malioboro. At least I don't have to listen to local Indo guys singing Karaoke there in the bar area.

As Hilo said, there are many different alternatives that are superior to all 3. But of those 3, I prefer Malioboro.

I am with you, though, on Malioboro 2014. I like the place. If I spotted a cute regular girl there and she smiled at me, I would probably give her a try, but I am really hooked on the dancers and don't want to go down in quality. I am kind of skeptical when someone tells me there are great girls for a quarter of the price somewhere else. 200,00 idr for real quality in Jakarta today seems a tad low. I am sure ex pats have plenty of opportunities to score great girls for less than retail though. That is one of the benefits of being there.

And everyone has to take a vietnamese girl in her swimsuit into the open air rooftop pool in Alexis at least once in their lifetime.

Your list below covers all the usual places. Some others to do some research on, depening on your age / inclination etc.

- Hardcore nightclubs, where mamasans oporate. Research Milles, Golden Crown etc etc.

- Classy nightclubs, where you will find classy working girls. Research Dragonfly, Loewy (its a bar not a nightclub) and the SCBD area.

- red light areas, like kalijodo (not been there do your own RTFF).

- Skye and Cloud. If you can find a wingman. Classy rooftop bars where you can meet girls, assuming your a classy white dude and don't have a face like a smashed crab.

- any number of dangut bars across the city. A few along Wahid hasyim, and 2 famous ones on jl Blora. Lone Star and Osmoro, research 'dangut music' - for many westerners they either love or hate it, but the indo chicks seem to dig it. You will certainly have an interesting expericne there and pickup very very easily, even if you were to have a face like a smashed crab.

- make sure when you goto to malioboro. You visit 'malio' club out the back.

If you like Alexis and are comfortable with the cost stick with it you are not likely to find anything better in the other three.

Oasis isn't bad for what you pay for, worth an early-evening visit, the topless dancers get going from 8 pm on Wednesday through Saturday.

BATs and CJ's, overpriced drinks and over-priced women surrounded by amateur hour middle-aged bules on expense accounts.

Delta, good for a pleasant if somewhat expensive mid-afternoon rub and tug but nothing exceptional.

Blok M, cheaper version of BATs and CJ's with concomitant quality of women and bules, some hotties hanging around Top Gun, good for a BJ from a dancer in Dee's (actually just the sixth letter of the alphabet but autocorrect won't allow that) Place VIP room but it's a grubby scene.

Can't speak about the club scene as it isn't my cup of tea.

The dangdut bars of Blora as suggested below might be worth a laugh and I'm glad I was reminded of them as I have never actually been there and I've now made a mental note to check them out.

If you're on the dating sites then you wouldn't go far wrong lining up some friends to pass the afternoon and evening.

Actually don't bother, I was taken by an ojek driver once with great promises of the carnal pleasures I would find there. I ended up supping a can of warm Beer Bintang in a little shack by the side of the street and having a chat with the mamasan before politely making my excuses and leaving. I figure I will check out 1 place per day, or more if the selections are not up to par at the first one. But we know the plans always change. I'm giving myself 10 days to have fun in a new city. I've been traveling in Asia (Thai, Korea, PI) for the past year so I don't need to go hard everyday. Most of the time in Thailand. I'm getting bored with the scene here. Time for some new tang. So I have finally decided to get over and check out Indonesia because of the variety of choices. I'm probably going to visit Alexis first. I want to try the beautiful selections / top picks they have there.
