I know the electricity situation has been rough there lately, but now the news here is reporting complete blackout across the entire island with virtually no electricity at all. Can the boots on the ground confirm? Or are they still doing rotating brownouts? Hopefully they make a deal soon and the Cuban people get some relief.

Yes, apagon general. - General blackout, including Havana vieja where I was staying. In fact the power only came back on 15 minutes before the taxista was coming to pick me up. Fortunately Monday evening was cool and a great breeze was about, so I opened the balcony doors completely and left only the security gate on the front door locked, with the main door open to let the air through. I've been thinking about visiting Cuba / Havana for the first time for quite a while now to monger. I've been to a bunch of other countries in Latin America and Asia, but not Cuba yet. If you're a type of person who needs certainty, you'll not like it at all.

Last week when I was there the power went out nationwide at 4 PM, didn't return the next day till a little after NOON, so a 20+ hour outage.

Good news, I still got breakfast at La Maravilla, limited, but good, eggs, toast, papaya, tomatoes and cheese, so not too terrible. Hotel Bristol had their generator running and I was able to get a coffee and charge my powerbank and phone for an hour, which was great. Many restaurants and bars were still open and serving food and drinks. However, San Ignacio 214, a restaurant I like because they have great mojitos for cheap $2. 50 apiece, they were closed. Sad because it's about 20 meters from where I stay, so it's super convenient. Also the convenience store near my apartment, which has beers, water, household goods like toilet paper, etc. They were open, but water was room temperature. Nothing cold.

So, if you're ok with having to adjust on the fly, you'll be ok as long as you have the following:

1) a ride FROM and TO the airport that's guaranteed.

2) a powerbank / power block. To power 2-3 high quality rechargeable fans, so you can control the air in your sleeping quarters.

3) a camp lamp / lantern, battery powered, preferably AA or AAA batteries, so you're not dependent on your power bank, unless you have a giant one.

If you have space, bring a small solar panel tied to rechargeable battery power bank, that'd be ideal too.

Mainly without consistent power, the internet will be *highly* unreliable and your ability to connect with the chicas via WhatsApp, Facebook, or other means. So you'll be stuck with the old reliable technique of wandering the streets and going to the clubs such as 212 or V&S, assuming they have generators and can still function. I didn't have time to test that last Monday night.

In short, if you're adaptable, go with the flow and can handle a high degree of uncertainty, then you'll be fine. If you need everything rock solid and dependable, I'd skip it until the fuel situation gets sorted and the grid is back to semi-normal functioning.

Yes, CAL is the way to go. They only restarted their POS. HAV flights a few years ago and it seems to be making $$ for them.

I know of 2 girls who took that route. HAV to POS (intransit) to GUY and then across into Brazil. Now in Curitiba.

One of them used to have an older boyfriend who had other friends (60 yrs +) who also wanted to have some Havana delights, so she'd arrange a cousin to come stay with and sleep with the friend. Usually it was in quality apartments on the Malecon and beach houses outside Havana, sometimes hotels like Packard. They paid for everything including dinner at La Paila and small gifts. They both got $100 per night and spending a minimum of 2 days & nights with them, sometimes up to a 7 days and nights. She had her head screwed on right and saved up her $$, so she made the trip in short time and had cash to start in Brazil.

They key is to go via Carribean Airlines but you can't buy the tickets online - you have to buy them at the airport or call one of their offices. Round trip is about $700 which sounds much more reasonable. I passed that information along to the first girl to keep her from getting ripped off.

The mongering gods rewarded me kindly for that act of good faith because despite having that new information the girl decided to stay anyway (more for me!).

But yeah, depending on how resourceful the girls is, it can be the smartest move of her life or the dumbest move of her life.
