Recent trip to Shanghai, and I decided to skip Manhattan's and Judy's and go straight for the saunas, to see if there are any that might hold a candle to Macau.

I was pleasantly surprised this time, compared to my previous experience with Kang Ding sauna (though I did go during CNY, so selection was poor).

Overall: Macau still wins, but can be more expensive by 400-800 RMB, though the experience is much nicer. So far the saunas in Shanghai seem to focus only on the room, no relaxing area really, and no decent food (usually just noodles or wontons). The rooms where you can "relax", generally after your session, are usually small with a TV blaring, and a few lounge chairs that look old and dirty with towels draped. There will be a lot of cigarette smoke and some cigarette burns also everywhere.

All of these places I found via Shanghai Nightlife Guide, so thanks to him for his website. Prices and locations are spot on, though the reviews are all glowing so it's hard to tell sometimes what you'll find.

My first try was ReHai, which is sometimes translated as Red Sauna. Characters mean "warm sea". It's located almost right next to the Damuqiao Rd metro station, but you wouldn't see it unless you're looking for it. There are guys around (security?) that will give you a clue. Prices here are good, 798,898 for most of the girls. You go down the stairs in what looks like an older hotel, and end up in a lobby where they'll direct you to the changing room. You do everything yourself and there's not really a place (or a need) to shower. I went around 10 pm, and it was busy. Lots of girls though, and plenty of cute ones, some wearing costumes like sailor moon etc haha.

One of the managers will lead you around and help you make a selection, they can also help you reserve one who is busy at the moment, but there really wasn't a place offered for me to wait or rest. I was visiting this sauna a few weeks ago in Hongkou District, a joint for local mongers. In the midst of the session, there was a couple of loud talking johns in the hallway.
