Will be staying 1-2 weeks and would like to find a nice not too expensive guest house which is GF for occasional visits by local P4P providers.

I have read the forum about hotels etc. but don't see exactly what I am looking for.

Anybody in the Chinag Mai area have any recommendations?

First thing to consider is where you want to locate......what part of the city. I have stayed at the Hollanda Montri Guest House on the river.....reasonable price, small outdoor bar/restaurant, decent rooms. On the north side of the wall, just inside the wall and very near Thai Airlines ticketing office is the Queen Victoria Inn, run by a very agreeable English chap. GREAT place to eat, especially Sunday noon buffet. Or, try using guest house listings on [url]www.chiangmai1.com/chiang_mai/guesthouses_in_chiang_mai.shtml[/url] (this doesn't want to appear here correctly, so look for guesthouse listing on website)
I would suggest you study a map, pick your preferred location, then locate your guest house. Depending on how persnickety you are, there are many decent places to stay at reasonable prices. Oh, also check out Wiyira House. I know they are guest friendly.

I am guilty. A few years back I took my family to Thailand. One stop was in Chiang Mai. It was the 4th or 5th day into our self directed tour. The previous few days were spent in Bangkok. We had eaten lots of Thai food by then and we were still in need of the grease, surgar and perservative that have addicted us. We needed the full stuffed feeling that only a Big Mac and fries would give us. We all love Thai food just had not adapted to eating 4 or 5 times a day and eating a more healthy Thai diet. We had not beaten our addiction...you know the one that makes our asses and stomach so huge.

I did note the many Thais in Mac D's when we went there. Seems like they are getting addicted too. The big seller was the soft ice cream...also loaded with fat and sugar. I note to that the Thai wastelines are on the increase as well. Maybe we have exported too much of our junk food. Years ago you would never see a fat Thai. I have read that heart desease is on the rise in most Asian cities as well.

As promised, here's my Star XIX Report:

I went on Sept 14th (Friday). I got there when it just opened (around 8:20PM). I climbed up the narrow staircases leading to the bar. The staircases were very colorfully painted, I felt like I was a fun-house in an amusement park -- to add, at the top of the staircase was a little booth with a sign saying "150" -- admission cost. Wow, their rates have really skyrocketed. Makes me disappointed that I recommended the place. The first time I stayed there, right after it opened, I paid 1200 for a deluxe room and thought it was great value. The following year, I paid 1400 when their published website rates were 1700, and felt that at those rates, it was still worthwhile. No way is the place worth over 2000 a night, given their lack of a swimming pool and the other choices in Chiang Mai, such as Tamarind Lodge for around 2000, or a nice guest house for under 1000.

Up the road from Raming Lodge, then turning on your left and walking for about 6-10 minutes you'll come across Lai Thai Guesthouse. I stayed there for 5 days (680B)> Very decent rooms, girl friendly plus a swimming pool for good measure. The girls I took there liked it since it was close and at the same time somewhat private. Its location in front of the moat and the lack of tall buildings around it give it a certain charm. I liked the place and will certainly stay there again when I visit Chiang Mai.
My next visit is scheduled for next year. I really had a beautiful time in LOS. Till then I'll follow what's going on.

I look for a "no joiner fee" hotel, price range +/- 1000-1500 thb with airco, hot shower, clean, not noisy.

Going to stay in Chiang Mai shortly but tired of living in hotels. As I will be staying for about 5 weeks, I thought I might try an apartment, if this exists in Chiang Mai. Any of you guys know of apartments of this kind and their rents? Does not have to be in the the tourist area.
