He was forced to pay for a transaction of 17,000 rmb by entering pin. They also took pictures of room key and made him sign a sworn statement that he enjoyed his "service". He said even though he had 2,000 rmb cash they weren't interested in that. As soon as he got back to hotel we called credit card place and cancelled transaction.

Been hesitant to post as I don't have first (or even 2nd) hand knowledge of what happens. And these forums tend to be a bit unforgiving. But what the hell, here's my two fen worth.

While I don't have any experience in this specific situation, I do have experience with both, administrative and criminal law in China (how and why belong in other forums). What I can say for sure is that most, if not all, laws are written to be intentionally vague. Both in the law itself and the punishment. Keep in mind, "the rule of law" (in quotes as that is a word of art) is very new to China and the adjustment has been going on at a snail's pace. This allows enforcement of the laws to be left up to judgement. This is where payoffs and other negotiations come in.

So, without knowing for sure, do I believe there are automatic penalties for being caught mongering, nope. It simply doesn't fit the model. I do know for sure however, that your job will absolutely have an impact in how you are treated. I was recently involved in a traffic altercation (yes, I drive in this crazy city) and was asked on two separate occasions (for the same incident) what I did in China. It wasn't until I satisfied them that I was a contributor to their tax system (ie, had a good job) that they made any effort to really help me in the situation. Personally I think this really sucks, but this is how it is.

Many people on this forum live there. Yes, Shanghai is challenging. It is not Bangkok. You can't just fall into pussy although it is pretty much everywhere you look.

Scams in Shanghai? Of course. But if you have read 3 pages here or SNG's (SNL as you call it) website every scam has been described. My own experience and others have been very good with his site.

So I should have known better, here on business and staying at my friends apartment. I was staying so close to Nanjing Road I decided to try WeChat with some girls and see where it lead. I usually go to the high end massage / spa places, but this was my mistake. Big mistake.

Took my wallet, used my phone to check balances on my cards and bank account. Took my cards and swiped. They said they wanted 29 k RMB and I have no where near that amount. They held me there for some time and I tried my best to talk them down. Ended up swiping about 2 K USD on my cards and made me sign. They let me go and I immediately called my card companies and had them block the transaction and issue a new card.

Do not go to Nanjing Road.

Are the local small BBS safe? It's been two years since I've been back, so I'm unaware.
