But at night th girls will hang around the beach cafes and the front of the hotels. They are obvious and they will approach you anyway because a single guy (gringo?) is fair game. But I would recommend you just go to the Balcony Bar which is on Avenue Atlantica and within walking distance of your hotel (most likely). If you are in a classy hotel they will not let you take the favella hos to your room. But the girl will take you to one of the pay by the hour hotels just a few streets back from the action on the Avenue. So just lay back an relax and let her earn her keep. She will know where to go. My advice. Stay with the crowds at night. Do not go into dark side streets late at night in the copa area. Take a taxi. Its safer.

When arriving in GIG, I decided to experiment and take the Real Bus (Blue greyhound type bus) Ipanema. As soon as you walk out of arrivals terminal 1 or 2, just take a right, and go all the way down. Its not far. You will see a relatively short line of people. I asked for price, was told 12R by the guy in light blue outfit and wearing a tie. I tell him the destination, you points to the next stop with a line of 12 people ahead of me. Ok, I head on over with a couple of large bags and my carry on. It's about a 15-20 minute wait for the bus to show up. Its called the "Yellow line" bus route. However, all of their buses are blue, so don't be on the look out for a yellow bus. The only yellow buses, or the smaller shuttle buses.

It took me about 45 minutes to get to my stop. I simply told the bus driver to stop at Plaza General Osorio. They have designated stops which you will see on the map inside the bus. However, he had some sympathy because of the rain and dropped me off P. General Os. You pay the 12r ($6 dollars) as you enter the bus. As they place your bags under the bus storage area, they will place a sticker on each bag with a serial number and give you the matching set of numbers as well. This way, as the stops occur, they will only allow you to take the bag that matches the numbers in your hand.

It was actually very organized. I sat on the right side of the bus where I could still see the bags taken out in each stop just to be on the safe side. Over all, not bad. I saved quite a few bucks compared to taking one of those taxi's from the booths as you walk out of baggage area. That has to be close to the 90R or so price since I was last in Rio.

Honestly, if your are traveling with a buddy, would be worth taking a taxi in the departure area for 50r (offer it to a taxi driver who just dropped offf someone and has to head back anyway) and split the cost with your buddy. Saves a lot of time. I don't mind the bus, but after a long over night flight and dealing with immigration and baggage pick up, most people are beat and spent, so they just want to get to their place quickly and crash.

I did it for the experience, and also becuase on a Saturday there is less traffic on the streets, so its a bit quicker. But even then, it took between 45-60 minutes plus the 20 minutes waiting outside the terminal. You do the math and see if its worth it to you. BTW, the bus had AC and was very comfortable. Thanks to another member of the forum, I gave this a try. Now I just have to figure how to get from my apartment to GIG! I forgot to ask, I was half brain dead after that long overnight flight. Hope this helps someone.

Left clicking the name of the bus run tells you where it stops. When the fare was $R8, I'd take the bus to Santos Dumont and grab a cab to Copa. When the fare increased, I grabbed a cab on Atlantica. On my return to GIG, I always took a cab, as I didn't want to risk missing my flight. That also allowed me to spend a little more time on the ground vs time spent waiting, going to GIG by bus.

I just hate the amount of time it took after a couple of 10-12 hour flights, or worrying if I would make it to the airport on time for the departure flight.

The taxis on the Arrivals floor are too expensive! I go up to the Departures floor (2nd) and take a cab that just dropped someone off. Usually 50$R. 60$R (during peak hours).
