There is a rumour going around that The Sportsman (or Sporties as it is affectionately known) has closed yet again. I haven't been down the blok in a while, but given the way things are going there, it's unsurprising. The place used to do decent food and was a good option for an early drink before the main attractions, especially if you didn't want to get hassled by the usual remoras that ply their trade by getting in your face and offering massages and whatnot. What I cannot ascertain from this forum is how the spas work; I understand that there are locker rooms and a arm tag / numbering system. *.

However, does one change clothes into towels / gowns, and leave valuables in the locker, or just shoes? *.

In Macau, I typically leave my valuables in the locker, but take iPad or whatever with me if I want to spend a good few hours relaxing.

Any feedback will be most appreciated.

You are given an arm tag with a key. You lock all your valuables inside. You will be given a robe, shorts, and flip-flops. You shower anytime you want, enjoy the spa facilities, workout, or lounge around. If you consume any food or partake any girls, you will be billed to your arm tag. You settle your bill after you get back in your clothes, on your way out.

I haven't been to every single establishment in Jakarta to say for sure. But at least it was the case in Orchardz and other similar spas I've been to.

I have walked into Kartika and I believe Berlian (if it is a door or two from Kartika) and they are much smaller and I doubt they have any procedure beyond going to the room with all your things (but I haven't had a session at either). They also are much more downscale than Malioboro.

When you enter Malioboro and after going through their metal detector, you go to the front desk and get a number, which is used to track your purchases. You then have two basic options (although there are some variants). One you can head straight up to the large lounge where you sit at a table, buy drinks, watch what is on stage (girls dancing either with clothes on or perhaps some off), look around at the many girls seated at tables and couches (often segregated more or less by nationality), have lap dances (I don't, but believe they probably cost around IDR 50,000 or a shot), have lineups of girls brought to your table, and so forth. Once you find a girl you like, you can either have some drinks first, or go straight to the room, with all your things with you (although it is possible they won't let you bring a camera past the metal detector; I have but sometimes had to do some fast talking). The mama-san has you sign a sheet of paper indicating the price, which is payable (along with the bar tab and so forth) on your way out, at the front table where you were initially given your number (which is on a wristband). Some tipping of the girl is expected I believe, and IDR 100,000 is probably the minimum. I think you give this to her directly after the session (unlike Alexis Hotel, e.g., where you can sign for the tip). The charge for the girl starts around 850,000 and can go up to maybe 2 million or more depending on nationality and so forth (not unlike Macau, although the girls are not in "national costumes ").

The other option which you can do before or after the above, is to go to the locker room, leave most of your stuff in a safe locker (with attendants), and head to the steam room, sauna, and pool or jacuzzi area. The attendants there give you some sort of gym like thing to wear, and if I recall it is expected that at least the shorts will be worn in the area, including the sauna (not to my liking). Sometimes there are girls dancing along the pool in various stages of undress. After taking a shower, you then can proceed to the lounge area above. I don't think I have seen many, if any, people stay in their gym clothes in the lounge, although frankly I might not notice.

Unless you are rushed, the steam room/sauna area is worth spending some time at, and also can be used as a rebound area.

I believe there is also a place to get non-sexual massages on premises, and I think a small gym room but my memory on this is not clear.

If you are looking for a similar, although more expensive experience, you can also try the Alexis Hotel, which is maybe 15 minutes further north from Malioboro, the caveat being you never know how long a trip is going to take in Jakarta owing to traffic considerations. But I don't really see any big advantage to Alexis over Malioboro, although some of my very well-off friends prefer it.

I posted more about that either in this forum or the Philippines forum. Basically use a webcam to ensure that the pictures are of her and are recent. But after you have used the pool, steam room, and / or sauna and have taken a shower, there are other gym like clothes available from a booth next to the pool. I'm not sure whether these are for further gym activities, or whether some wear these when they go up to the lounge. As said earlier, I have only been there maybe five times, so my recollection of some of these details is not so good.
