Well, actually it is more like. I came, saw and lost!

Acknowledgments first: I have to formally thank Frannie – who was both extremely kind and generous with his time, advice and hand holding (actually even spoon-feeding my initial forays). I even discussed Toynbee and Gibbon with him not to speak of Jane Austen – an amazing coincidence. I also need to thank Charles Pooter (who I unfortunately could not meet during my short 6 night stay) for his critical and helpful comments at the planning phase.

Finally, I would like to thank and I do not know who (as I cannot find the report). Someone on this DR forum laid out a plan as to how to get contacts on the web prior to arrival and the modus operandi thereafter. Now, while I did amass a lot of such contacts – many came to see me from Puerto Plata.some of which worked wonderfully and some not, I do think it is perfectly okay not to have any game plan whatsoever –which probably is the beauty of the place.

Veni: I landed at Puerto Plata – rode a public taxi (driver +six passengers in a Toyota Corolla) along with Frannie who was kind enough to come to the airport to alleviate the beginner's blues. For 50 peso, I got a ride to Sosua and there on walked to the hotel. It was perfectly okay for me, even on a hot sunny summer day.

Stay: I stayed at a hotel called Romanoff. This is an apartment hotel. People can pay a little more for the apartments as compared to the room which is what I had. I also settled for a non-A / C room and indeed barring the late afternoons, the temperature was almost always pleasant with low humidity and with a fan going, I had no trouble sleeping.

I understand the hotel does not have a website but you should be able to google the contact details.

Chica- friendly: I see this coming out as a regular topic of concern. One afternoon, I was sitting outside chatting with a group of guys (English, Dutch, German, French Canadian, Italian and indeed Russian –the owner) and of all ages as we also watched games walking by. Personally, I enjoyed shooting the breeze with these guys in as many languages as chasing the women. I was speaking with the owner when my appointment (from the Disco contact) arrived. The owner, a 70 year old with an immaculate English accent, looked at me and said: 'well, I see that we will have to postpone our discussion for later', with a wink. Hopefully that tells you what the place is like in terms of the relaxed mood that prevails. It is a quiet place – no partying or bragging rights game. There are many long term residents who live in this quiet, tree covered / adorned apartments which are probably not as sleek as newly renovated properties but it did it for me (I am also a cheapskate!).

I paid $30 for the room per day and it was clean. I do want to warn you that if you fancy extra comfort or a glitzy environment, this is not it. I found it to be a place, which is extremely non-judgmental, clean with all the basic amenities we take for granted in the western world and very much a fraternal environment with respect for all. Located in a quiet street (City Hall is on the same street) with very little noise, I loved the idea of walking to Clissante.Main street – a 10 minutes walk perhaps to the Merengue bar, as I discovered avocado, mango, lime and numerous other fruit trees with fruits hanging, pointed out to me by a 20 year old who was very knowledgeable on these as she hailed from the country.

Vidi: This was my first trip to Sosua (and D. R) and so I did not know what to expect. Nonetheless, here is my impression:

1. The Main street – I liked it because it came across as quaint to me – tree lined, not much noise when I visited, one way and full of European restaurants. We dined at an Austrian place, and an Italian place. Food quality was excellent (I lived in EU for long and am used to the real European food). By the way, there is an Italian restaurant called Bologna. Which is as genuine as one can get. In addition to two dinners, I had a fine chocolate croissant and café con leche breakfast one morning –kindly offered by one newly made friend there.

2. Women on the street: Most restaurants had sun umbrellas out and eating in the evening was rather pleasant as we saw the world go by. Close to Latino's or Merenque, there were indeed women but I was neither solicited nor harassed. I found it pleasant in that if I wished to, I could approach anyone but not the other way around which is what I like personally. Prior to getting there, I was worried that this is a place like the Reeparbahn in Hamburg. Garish neon signs and noise. I was pleasantly surprised to see an almost European style, tree lined, not very wide 'rue' where most of the time you could even walk with your children.

3. Disco: I spent two nights at the 'Classico' and at the bar below. Got to know the two managers – both of whom are Italians and am told the owner as well. I also went for a short stint to the Latino for good meringue music –dragged by two women I was with. The ratio of women to men at the disco was perhaps even 10 to 1. I cannot say what it was like before but I never felt there was any shortage of game if you are a beast of prey! The first night, I walked with two women to the disco and they made my day (or night) – what with the beautiful Bachata music (it sounds as soft and pleasing to me as Reggae is ). The Reggeton music represents the other end – full of energy (Tutta la gasolina. If you know what I am referring to). The two women grinded against me with complete and gay abandon and there were others who showed much interest in doing lo mismo! In general, I will say this, because I tried this on the second night. If you want to go alone and just dance by yourself, very soon you will find women rubbing their butt against you. I know most of it is driven by business interest – nonetheless, it is a rather pleasant exercise, at least it was for me as the line between the hunter and the hunted gets blurry.

4. Women at large: I cannot say enough good things about them. They are probably the most pleasant of women I have seen. Mostly docile, women have to do the heavy lifting with all the child raising they do (which of course is the reason why they are so plentiful) but I have seen many other place where women wear a scowl. Not here – they came to the hotel at all odd hours and despite the fact they barely knew me, they were always nice and decent. Most women always have a smile and that is indeed quite an achievement given the roughness life has dealt them. They reminded me of creepers who are always looking for trees around them, to latch on to so they can flourish.

5. Gifts: I had brought gifts for them from the US (mostly aeropostale T-shirts) which always were appreciated – especially as it was a surprise.

Connections: Thanks to Frannie, I started with a massage the afternoon of my arrival and again the first evening (the airline lost my luggage and so the first night was somewhat stressful without fresh / clean clothes in the heat) , with a smart, beautiful Haitian woman – again thanks to Frannie. By the way, there were plenty of Haitian women (who seem to be a big hit with many – especially the francophone) all around not including the massage parlors.

Second day onwards, I started touching base with my online contacts with my new local phone number (BTW, I took my US phone and at a local Orange store, was able to 'rent' a local sim card for a 500 peso deposit plus minutes with additional money. It worked like a charm). On a side note, I did not but some of you may try the smart and English speaking woman at that store – close to Bailey's restaurant. She looks feisty, with a nice set of mammary that are put well on display as indeed by most local women.

8. I liked 4 women at the disco good for my taste but I never brought anyone back to hotel at 4 AM – always walked back alone. I like to sleep by myself, my libido is not too strong at the wee hour of the morning and I do not like to pay a huge sum for the 'night', I got the phone numbers and next day set up time – mostly in the late afternoons as before that, their phones seem to be dead / turned off.

9. Passions etc. I did not go there – actually do not know where it is either but did not see any need whatsoever to go fish as someone said here from a 'fishbowl'. The whole place is waiting to be fished and you do not have to be no Tom Cruise, to finagle yours.

10. I also found women that did have qualms about coming to the hotel. Indeed, I struck up conversation with a woman who works at a store. I invited her but she came back on the back seat of a motor bike driven by her brother at the end of her work day. She explained that people will talk, wanted me to go to her house and excused herself. I was perfectly fine with that as of course, I do not want to do anything against a woman's will. The interesting part was that she called back in the evening and asked if I was mad at her (she used the word –"furioso" which I could not quite figure out until a Spanish speaking friend intervened to speak to her to understand what she was trying to say). In the same vein, there was another young woman who I found to be high maintenance – probably justifiably.she came all the way from Puerto Plata (like a few others I met online) and so I specifically cut the cord and she came back with the same question – if I am mad. Go figure!

11. I think the most interesting aspect of the country is this. Not only you have people who work in this specific trade but you have a good chance of striking gold with the rest as well. This possibility, coupled with the fact that they somehow prefer to hang out with older men (they gave many reasons for this and some were as specific as "no more Dominican men" which true or not, I find somewhat tragic) and that they are extremely friendly (we had situations in which sexual banters were hurled at them and it did not frazzle them at all. They took it, laughed at it as much as the white men did. An interesting exercise in contrast to other women elsewhere who would probably be very offended!) – made Sosua an extremely interesting experience for me.

12. At a personal level, when I used to travel to Asia, I never thought of conversing with the locals – being on business travel, I did not have time to learn Thai or Bahasa to be an insider. The fact that I can actually speak the language with the DR women (everyone- males and females were gracious even if I made terrible errors) makes it for me a very atypical exercise and perhaps sets the place apart from the others.

Lost money. Paid between 1000-1500 (and at times lower amount).depending on my mood, friendliness and other calculations. Lost much leche. BTW, I tried some medications but it just did not do it for me.

I also lost (and left) a bit of my heart there. It is weird to have a young 24 year old woman leaning against you in bed, completely nude, checking something on her beautiful breast in complete and absolute trust. On another occasion, I could not produce 'leche' for a woman and she was disappointed. I tried to be candid (as stupid as I still am) but she did not take the truth of my being with others earlier well (God, sometimes, it is better to lie to a woman!). For someone like me, no longer in his prime, it made me look back at life gone by wistfully.

I visited hotel romanoff years ago, two pros were sharing an apartment there, seemed like a nice place (Azul blonde wig sometimes, half colombian-half dominican chica, very pleasant and her roommate was a brunette). Years ago there was a bar / restaurant called Capirinha, across the street from the hotel romanoff, that stayed open 24/7, not sure if that place is still there.

Bologna bar and restaurant years ago was a nice quiet place, good to see that it is still open.

One question, you "rented" a Sim card from Orange? I knew a chica who used to work for Orange and I asked her about a year ago, the cost of a Sim card at Orange to Buy and she told me 200 pesos. The cell phone companies make their money on the minutes you purchase, they could give some equipment away for free and still make money. I am not sure how Orange is in Sosua. There is a Claro shop in Sosua, near the antenna, they should Sell sim cards with minutes for under 500 pesos.

Regarding the best amenities, many people say Terra Linda, but it all depends on what amenities matter to you.

Going rates for short time are generally $1500 to $1000 pesos, but it may depend to some extent on the situation and your negotiating skills. If you are prepared to walk if you don't get your way, then expect to pay at the lower range. The moral is obviously to negotiate on price before you get to the point of no return, meaning the point at which it would be difficult to get another girl.

I have paid 2000 pesos to two girls for a threesome, but this might be overpaying as usually one girl most of the work while the other slacks off unles you really keep both on task. Probably 750 each would still make them both happy.

I usually pay 600 pesos for massage plus happy ending. The basic is 300 pesos for half an hour of massage, plus 300 tip for so-called extras. Girls will ask for as much as they think they can get. Again the trick in negotiating is to say that you don't want the happy ending and that another girl offered it for less anyway, or you can say that you only have x pesos, and she can take it or leave it. So basically just tell them what you will pay and leave it at that.

I don't know why I am telling you these tricks. A lot of the girls are really hurting now as there are not many customers around. Also some of the girls are a bit choosy regarding age and ethnicity of customers, which may further narrow their options. I was talking to one of my favorite massage girls an hour or two ago, who is wonderfully talented, and whom I am quite fond of and she told me she has not had a single customer today and I know she is hurting for money. I arranged to see her on Sunday.

As far as all night, I really would not recommend this unless you already know the girl and have a good rapport, in which case you will already know how much you want to pay her. If you want sex in the morning it may be better to meet a girl at night and arrange to see her in the morning. You could then have another girl for nightcap sex.

Although prices can be bargained and it is stupid to overpay as a display of conspicuous consumption, I would not encourage guys to try to bargain girls into the ground just for the hell of it. They probably need the money more than you do, so pay a reasonable price. On the other hand, if you grossly overpay, they may head straight for the lottery ticket booth with your money. It depends on the girl.

For prices you can also look at the menu for la Passion which you can find online. Usually you would expect to pay a freelancer less money than you would pay to take a girl out of la Passion, so that may be a helpful guideline.

Cost of a meal varies quite a bit. For my lunch today I had a fresh avocado and a mango bought from a Haitian woman for about US$1 fir both, with some bread and butter and ice tea. Overall cost about US$1. 50. Prices go up from there.

To buy a plate of grilled chicken and side order from a Dominican restaurant is pretty cheap, cheaper than Kentucky Fried Chicken, but to eat steak in a nice restaurant like Baileys will be rather more pricey, though I recommend the Churrascuro steak. At a pricier restaurant you will also pay more for the drinks, coffee, desserts, taxes, tips, etc. You can get hamburgers and fries any place, though of variable quality, though even the worst will be better than McD or Burger King.

On the other hand there are plenty of very reasonable priced restaurants where you can get excellent food.

Schnitzel Paradise has excellent Schnitzel and I had a wonderful beefy goulash soup there the other day. Not expensive.

Elefante Rojo is an Italian place that has great pasta dishes, spaghetti, etc. At very reasonable prices.

Bologna Restaurant and Pizzeria is an excellent Italian restaurant. You can get pizza to go. I had an excellent small pizza Napolitano today for 250 pesos. The very large ones are double the price and are world class pizza, not Dominos garbage.

There are several German restaurants, some of which have some excellent sausage or salami and potato dishes.

Anyway, all these places are close together and you can just walk around until you see something you like the look of. Mostly prices are posted outside.

Fruit can often be bought in the street. In the supermarket I recommend the bottles of liquid drinking yoghurt, about $1, various kinds of German bread and pastries, including sumptous chocolate croissants and Danish pastries, various kinds of salami, which they will slice for you.

Local beer such as Presidente or Bohemia is good. Expect to pay 40 pesos for a small cold beer in a convenience store (colmado) , but 100 pesos and up in a bar or restaurant. Drink prices are highest in disco or night club as you might expect.

Lemonade? To be honest, yo do not see a lot of lemons here, and just to cause confusion the word limon means lime not lemon. You can get bottles of Minute Maid lemonade in the stores, but that stuff is crap and expensive. You can probably get lemonade in a more expensive restaurant like Bailey's and you may be able to get a bottle of lemon juice concentrate and sugar in the supermarket, if you want to make it yourself. Personally I brought enough tea bags to make 25 gallons, as that is my favorite tipple. You can buy a gallon pitcher here for a dollar or two.

Overall food is very good and prices are very reasonable if you try to stick to local produce and manufactures. Imported stuff is very expensive, as you would expect.

The Orange store by the Texaco in Sosua I bought a phone with minutes for under 500 pesos. Keep an eye out for the cheap phones street vendors sell for around 200 pesos with minutes, I only ran into them once and passed like a idiot, I should have bought a half dozen.

Good lenthy report Fannie. One thing I would not agree with, is regularly eating from local vendors. I don't skimp when it comes to good food, the last thing I need is to be sick on vacation because I wanted to save 3usd. Mauri Mauri, Baileys etc are worth the 10usd investment, if it digest correctly. The two vendors I eat from are Ollies and the grill that used to be in front of four roses. If you are a newbie and arent sure which street vendors are good, just watch a few minutes to see if they have alot of gringo clientelle. Don't just eat food strangers walk around selling.
