So I like Ermita / Malate. I also like Makati, but the two areas are very different. That is why sometimes I stay in Makati and sometimes I stay in Malate. Now I know Ermita / Malate is not for everybody and it is cool with me if a forum member does not like the place. But in this case, I think the area has been falsely maligned. Star is saying that if a monger visits Ermita / Malate he will get robbed, mugged or killed. And that is just not true. The area is just not like that, not even close. And I think most guys that have been here will agree with me.

In the interest of self disclosure I will say I am not the biggest fan of MBC. I like the raunchy city ambiance of the place and drop by MBC from time to time when I am in the area, but I find too many of the girls are not good enough for my tastes. Some are and I have never had a bad time with a MBC FL. Furthermore, I think most forum members would not consider me a cheapster by any means. I spend whatever is necessary to get a girl I want provided I am not paying above the list market price of the place where I find her. So in MBC I pay the MBC price, in EDSA I pay the EDSA price, in Burgos the Burgos price and in AF1 I pay the AF1 price. I never let $$$$ stand in the way of having the girl I want unless she is being outrageous about it. Then I figure she is no good and I walk. I come to the PI not because of the prices but because I like the girls and their ways and I like the scuba diving and the remote island beaches. Once or twice a year I travel South East Asia. Some areas in the Philippines are inexpensive (AC) , but I will drop a wad of cash in Macau and BKK before even landing in AC. And Burgos is as expensive as BKK, AF1 is as expensive as Macau. Say, a Filipino bumped your car and you both argue and cops show up. Guess what would happen. You know the answer already. Yeah. You will need to pay up. Thats it end of story.

If you get robbed. The cops will ask you money to solve the case. Worse, if your gf bag get stolen and your man hood comes into the picture to get her the bag. The price gets doubled.

I know it can happen anywhere. But why venture into an area. Where the possibilities of problem are high?

I've also had positive experiences with the PNP. To say that they are not interested in your plight, or only want money from foreigners, is just not always true. While some pnp want a quick bribe for some things, many others are little different than police in my country (an honest day's work).

The only time that I have been held up at gunpoint, bound, gagged and cleaned out was in Washington DC, USA. About midway between the Australian embassy and the House of Congress. Upper class hotel.

When I eventually got free and phoned the police, they were not interested, because I had not been shot, or killed. They would not even attend the scene of the crime. Interestingly, it became a diplomatic incident. And some years later, when I went to work in a secure environment in DC, it was a fairly prominent issue in the file.

About the only time that I have been fearful of walking the streets has been in some of the SE areas of DC, and the lower Manhatten areas of New York city.

In comparison, walking through squatter areas of Manila and surrounds is quite safe, childs play.

It is astonishing to the point of being bizarre, that with the present discussion regarding safety on the streets of Manila, that I myself should become the victim of a street robbery which happened yesterday in Pasay.

The circumstances were as follows. I was meeting a young DIA squeeze for the first time. As she lives in Quezon City and I'm based at the other end of the city, I agreed to meet her roughly halfway in Pasay. Another ISG member had recommended the branch of Sogo located on EDSA Harrison, so I thought I would give it a try.

I arrived a little early for our 2pm meeting so spent the time grabbing a quick meal at Chow King and then strolled through Baclaran market. I was on Harrison and about 100 metres from Sogo when I felt a hard tug on my neck. I swung around just in time to see a guy haring back down Harrison. The bastard had ripped a silver chain from around my neck. I thought of setting of in pursuit but rapidly discounted it. The chain itself was virtually worthless. What was of value to me was the old Greek silver coin that I had picked up in Palmyra in Syria. But this had fallen off the chain as he tore it from my neck and was lying at my feet. So all the asshole got was a cheap Argos silver chain. I would have just loved to be a fly on the wall when he tried to sell that at his local pawnshop.

I carried on to my assignation. The theft actually served as an excellent ice breaker with the sweet but very nervous girl I met there and we had an excellent, fun filled afternoon.

Its not the first time that I have been robbed in The Philippines. I have had my pockets picked twice on Jeepneys (once in Manila and once in Angeles) but it is the first time that any degree of physical force was used against me. But not too bad considering the number of years that I have lived here and the dodgy places that I have been to, often late at night. Just my luck that my first snatch should take place in the middle of the day on a busy street!

When I was there in June, I just walked really fast. The beggars could not keep up. And I also used the I'm LATE approach so as to keep them away. Most of the time though if you look like you won't talk they will leave you alone. As everyone always says here: passport, wallet, camera, etc in the safe. Take only what you will be prepared to lose.

However, you can't assume because he was an American English tutor that he was knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with being on the business end of a hand canon. Contrary to what you see on TV most Americans will never experience armed robbery. After my honeymoon period got over, I came to my senses in the PH and it seemed like back home but with great sex and night life. PH is extreme, either you meet very good people or very very bad guys, if you meet one bad guy, its all over. They shoot you first before taking your wallet. In India, at least they spare your life. If you are non-threatening. So the confidence and the dream life I imagined turned out to be not so true after all.

However, I will trade PH with India anyday, even with all the crimes around. I'm a sex addict, and with my third world income, I can only afford to visit PH, you are right, the initial hoopla has truly died. Sad but true yet I will go with the option of PH. Still way better than India.

bartolome said law enforcers should emphasize greatly on community mobilization, proactive intelligence, neutralization of wanted persons, and interdiction operations against organized crime groups.

the pnp chief also asked espina of a zero backlog solution on the pending administrative cases against erring policemen.

he added that all pending administrative cases involving ncrpo personnel should be resolved within the next 30 days.

bartolome made these statements days after two policemen from the quezon city police district (qcpd) tried to extort money from no less than the son of espina.

on tuesday evening, two policemen chanced on a vehicle parked along doña hemady street in quezon city and saw the driver, who turned out to be espina's son, chatting on his mobile phone.

the two cops, identified as senior police officer 4 jose dela peña and police officer 2 resty del rosario, accosted the vehicle and accused espina's son of engaging in "phone sex."

they allegedly demanded p20, 000 as "fine" for the violation, which was later negotiated to p5, 000.

however, the cops' extort try failed when espina's son handed his mobile phone to dela peña, who talked to the ncrpo chief.

upon realizing that a high-ranking police official was on the other line, dela peña returned the phone to espina's son and abandoned him.

espina has clarified that his son did not give the money to the erring cops, who belong to the qcpd mobile patrol unit.

the two have been disarmed since the incident while their badges were confirep001ed.

the ncrpo chief has vowed to go after abusive law enforcers, saying he will not allow "a few rotten eggs" to ruin the reputation of the pnp.
