Probably because of the bus terminal at the back (the new bus station hadn't been built). It's open plan design meant it was a great place to flirt going up and down the escalators and in the food basement. I can't remember actually picking up girls there but certainly flirting. Nobody had mobile phones though a few guys had pagers.

Faletahan had more antique shops and snooker halls than bars, by 4 pm Top Gun would be buzzing and overflowing with working girls, indeed it got so bad that the girls got barred from entering the back bar / restaurant of Top Gun so mister bule could get peace to drink his beer after work. Then suddenly in 1992 the working girls of Blok M / Melawai started to catch on to what was happening at Blok M Plaza and decided to get into some action within the Plaza. They started to wear school uniforms and frequent the plaza in the late afternoons. Obviously this began to upset the shopkeepers, as what had been built as a fairly high class mall was quickly becoming a den on iniquity.

A massive sweep and police raid was arranged with the support of TV channels. Dozens of girls were rounded up, my roommate who worked in the Matahari store nearly lost her job as a result, as she'd forgotten to carry her I'd card that day. Most Jakartans remember the incident and the Plaza did well to survive with it's reputation intact. Nostalgia moment over.

Moving onto today, I wouldn't regard the Plaza as a place to pick up girls. If a young attractive girl does approach you she is most probably trying to sell you a timeshare in Bali. Today if I was looking to pickup girls in the kavelings of the blok and was 30 years younger it would be in the basement of Blok M Square where there is an amazing collection of second hand bookshops and ripe young university girls looking for conversation.

I had no luck on either count. The girls just aren't there. I've had some success in Blok M mall, but he was clear that he hadn't got the places mixed up & I've also been lucky more than once whiling away some time having a tactical lunch break in the small park between Blok m plaza & Blok m mall. They were not beauties but it was an experience & they weren't pro's which was a bit different for me!

Yuli had been around a while, but her sister showed up one day wearing one of those cheap looking sweaters that grandmothers wear in the kampung. She wasn't dressed sexy in any way. Last week I was with a mate in BlokM around 1 am and were feeling well rather hungry. So headed for some fast food behind BlokM Plaza.

So we headed out of Falatehan where the one-way starts, and turned left, then left again heading toward the bus station. This road had food carts, cooking up a storm for the locals and around 10 F / L's on motorbikes with their minder / pimps sitting with them or smoking in the gutter. Some of the girls looked pretty good. Young and arguably better than alot of the BlokM quality. I didn't see any old girls like some of the older species found in TopGun. Who are only their because they can speak English. This is pretty much the same as you will find in Mangga Besar or the road in front of Classic any night of the week. This is the first time I have ever noticed this scene, so I couldn't advise if it gets better or worse than I discovered that night. Now we had a few stops and chats and didn't find any english speakers, but some of the pimps were english speakers.

So crossing jl. Sissing (long name) . Street, we headed around blokM plaza to the north. Here there were lots of both young boys and girls. I didn't notice it as a FL scene, but just young kids out having a good time. But we were walking on and a food mission. If anyone has ever googled "cabe-cabean blokm" you will find some info on that area.

This street is one of the areas mentioned. And down to the park Taman Ayodya. Past KOI, where Jl Barito the bird street starts.

I agree that you can find better looking girls in the streets these days in that area than you can find on the blok for the most part.
