The general way I have seen things go in UK is that usually there are 2 camps for every single 'big' event. I call them the oh-my-gosh and zero-fucks-will-be-given camps. There were people who used the royal wedding week to take a week's vacation, groups protesting that the BBC was cheerleading for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and now the Olympics. I would have been elsewhere except that by the time I sorted out my vacation plans, the tickets were above 1500 GBP (I usually travel in coach on my own money, I am just under 6 feet tall and I can put up with the discomfort) , so I decided to stay and make some more money and spend it when the ticket prices come back to Earth.

Also the crowds have been forecast for so long that even folks who would have been in town might have decided to go out.

So this could be the reason for relatively empty museums and such. One thing for the commuters is that, these two weeks seem to have less breakdowns in the public transport network than is usual, so I aint complaining.

As for the post-London Olympics economic forecast, I couldn't agree more.
