But I learned 2 things right away SOSUA is SAFE! Righteously safe! 2. Small! I would says its 6 city square blocks by 3 avenues. Easy to navigate. NO ONE IN MY STORY HAS TRIED TO ROB ME BY FORCE Remember that!
I woke up. Ate a great breakfast at NG. Try eggs w / sausage. And started running my errand. You make a right from NG go up 1/2 block you will see a bunch of people on that corner those are the bad guys. Whatever that Black Haitian is selling don't buy it. He trys to be friendly but he's a rip off. Make a left where those Haitians are and walk down 2 blocks you will see orange! Rent a sim card there for 500 pesos deposit 100 peso for phone service. TIP#1 BRING A SIM BLACKBERRY. It will save you money and time! Orange can only activate BB from this location! For 1. 00 a day you will get data service everywhere! This is a 2nd world country.
Next to the orange store is Banco Popular. I have never exchanged money so far, I gave all my money to NG and used capital one ATM. They gave me market rate 1 to 38 charged me a 4 dollars surage (2 in USA 2 in Sosua) I took out 9000 pesos at a time. Dominicans BUY sim cards from Orange for around 200 pesos. Foreigners are allowed to buy sim cards. I use Claro, I have no experience with Orange. In Sosua near the Bon Ice Cream Shop (1/2 block from New Garden Hotel) , you should see a large antenna (verizon labels may still be visible on the antenna). Across the street from that antenna should be a Claro call center, probably also sells cell phones and Claro sim cards. I have bought one Claro sim card at the airport in Santo Domingo for less than 500 pesos ($13US) with minutes included. I have also bought a ZTE brand cell phone at Claro with a sim card and minutes included for around 480 pesos. The Claro Sim card I used in my unlocked GSM Nokia cell phone from the United States. Blackberry phones are popular in DR.
Amazon and Newegg and other sites cell unlocked GSM cell phones that take Sim Cards, starting from $30US. There are cell phones that can take two Sim cards, so you can have a cell phone with two different numbers. Expansys online site, sells unlocked dual Sim cell phones.
To save on ATM fees, some guys use paypal ATM cards, some guys use Charles Schwab ATM cards. Bank of America has some type of partnership with Scotia Bank. There are Scotia Bank ATMs in the DR. Bank of America offers a no fee checking account. With that checking account and the Bank of America ATM card, there should be no fee to withdraw money from Scotia Bank ATMs in the Dom Rep.
Casinos will give you cash for a fee. You could possibly buy chips at a casino using your ATM or credit card card, walk around a bit in the casino, return to the cashier window and cash in the chips for Dominican pesos.

Ok so this is my first time in Sosua, third time to DR. I am writing this after spending.
Four weeks here and have four more to go.
