So key words: imagined, believe, paranoia. Modern Western policy generally does not directly encroach on the sovereignty of powerful nations, just weak or third world nations which is why I think Russia's security concerns are unwarranted, at least regarding western advancement. For powerful nations, the method of battle is through cultural or economic influence.

The incorporation of Russian-bordering nations into NATO was won by western political-economic influence rather than by hostility or aggression. It's like Russia is losing a board game and is now deciding to flip the whole game board over because they can't win by the rules and maintaining decorum.

Southern Muslim security concerns is a whole other matter, more domestic than international as Russia can control its own borders and policies of letting brown people into the country.

That said, Russia is on the verge of becoming one.

RU is militarily powerful, true. Can they wipe out many people and in turn be wiped out? Yes. So can NK, China, Israel, India, Pakistan, many others. Once you know how to produce nukes, it is a matter of spending to make more of them, and the other part of the equation is delivery to a long distance destination in which case they can threaten anyone with extinction.

But does it all it take? Their economy today is a disaster, their currency is shot, and their technology besides armaments is non existent. If not for nukes, RU by the size of the economy, by per capita GDP, by various metrics of advancement, would be among the lower tier of nations. NK has nukes but many people starve to sleep every night, especially if not in the army. Does the ability to kill many people make NK superior to say, a Bulgaria, even Indonesia? I don't think so.

RU is a Chinese stooge because it is increasingly dependent on China to conduct their affairs. For supplies, for payments, for many other things.
