Questions from Tijuana newcomer
I don't live in the Southland but I've been reading these Tijuana forums for months and am sold on the sting-less mongering bargain this city seems to be (particularly the SG's), so I've tentatively decided to fly down to San Diego in January for 15-20 days (completely avoiding the year-end holiday travel rush) for some serious debauchery. The main thing I'm pondering is whether I should try staying in Tijuana or across the border somewhere in San Diego County (perhaps within walking distance of a trolley station near the National City / Main & Division strolls), or even roughing it out in the sticks somewhere for free on the US side if the weather is dry and warm enough. The obvious benefit of remaining in Mexico is not having to repeatedly deal with the northbound border line and inquisitive US border guards (I have a passport), but I'm a nonsmoker and have trouble sleeping in rooms with more than a hint of cigarette stench, and fear the Mexicans may be more lax about vigilantly maintaining non-smoking rooms than many US motels are these days (particularly in the cheaper hole-in-the-wall places in the Zona Norte). I've also read conflicting things on the Internet about whether the tap water in Mexico is still unsafe to drink or brush your teeth with, and should be completely avoided (I somehow got sick on it when I visited Mazatlan many years ago even though I was trying to avoid directly ingesting it) -- so what are your recommendations on all that?
Another major concern I have is avoiding girls under 18. I've looked at numerous pics of Tijuana SG's on Google, and many of them could be a little under that age for all I know -- particularly the ones who exaggerate their youthfulness by dressing in Mexican school girl garb. The situation is further muddled by the fact that even full-grown Latinas generally have a much smaller stature than Caucasian females. Am I supposed to just assume all the girls in the main strolls of the Zona have been checked out by authorities as being of legal age? Do they usually carry official identification, and can I request it if I'm nervous? The US State Department warns: "Soliciting sexual services of a minor is illegal in Mexico, and is punishable by imprisonment" -- then elsewhere on the same page warns of the horrors of the Mexican penal and criminal justice systems (plus if you survive imprisonment in Mexico, the US feds can then take a crack at you for traveling to a foreign country to engage in sex with minors). Yet despite these huge potential risks, I've seen little or no worry or discussion of this issue in the Tijuana forums.
The State Department also generally advises not to take Libre taxis, Volkswagen beetle taxis or any taxi not summoned by telephone in advance. I know some parts of Mexico are more dangerous than Tijuana, so I'm wondering if that precaution is necessary just to go from the Zona to the border?
Finally, where's a good place to buy pepper spray in SD or Tijuana, because I doubt the TSA will let me bring it on the plane.
