The place attracts because of the bars, it has nothing else remotely attractive. Add to that monthly reports of foreigner killings (AC has been given the name 'Tombstone') , muggings, frequent bar raids, police scams on visitors, AC-Manila bus robberies and killings, trike rip offs, hotel holdups, lousy food and poor shopping outside two average quality malls.

What is going on in ac? I have not been there since June why is there so many negatives? I am planning my next trip there in feb ac can not be as bad as everyone is reporting about paradise or as I like to call it sin city has plenty of positives then negatives. I have been a regular visitor there and I have had some of the best times there. You have to take the place for what it is the girls lie to us as we feed them a lot of bola bola as well at the end of the day if the make you happy what is the problem? Can some fellow members give me any details about any new hunting places there cheers for any info.

Towasrds the end of my last trip (Nov) , I took my gf to AC for a weekend to experience the place. She had never been to the type of girlie bars that they have there.

A few days before, I started to call hotels. Full. Every hotel that I checked was full. In the end, I got a room in an unusual hotel far off the beaten track.

But when we went downtown so she could check the place out, there were no mongers. The streets were almost empty, bars almost empty.

Next day, I had a chat with a guy who owns a pub there, and he says yes, that is the situation now.

His opinion was that it is the new way of mongering. Organise a girl over the internet, then shack up with her in your hotel room until you leave.

He thinks that sometime soon, the bars are going to have to take barfines over the internet and deliver the girl to the room. Wow.

I am not sure that I like that idea.

AC is a city of 315 000, add Dau, San Fernando and few other towns near by and you get close to 500 000. You can do anything from hot air ballooning, flying light aircraft and diving to hiking a volcano, shooting guns. 4wd driving, water fun in near by subic or the lake and so on. There are about 15 malls in AC but hey how many bother past the casino near the red light district? People love to hang shit and say there is nothing else to do but in reality we all get caught up in the pussy / drinking cycle that we never explore much else. How many of you have been to a philipino bar in AC? Do you even know they exist and yes girls dance naked. AC has plenty to do but we never bother, we like what we do and once our time is over and we are back home we wonder why we didn't do much else and we come up with stupid conclusions like there was nothing else to do. Then we hang shit on AC but we are back again and again. Welcome to Hotel California.

The 'Tombstone' comment is just great. What can I say I have been to AC around 30-40 times in the last 10 years. I have never been robbed. Never been threatened. Never been mugged. Once I saw a cop ask my taxi driver (NOT ME) for a bribe but hey they charge us 2-2500 peso for a trip that on meter is less then 1300. I once saw a fight between a middle aged women and a bar girl. The middle aged women accused the bar girl of ruining her marriage. On my last trip (story to follow) I saw a philipino guy throw a glass at a bar girl and thats it folks. Maybe I have been lucky. Few days ago in Bali I was nearly pick pocketed lucky I left my wallet at the hotel and the girl I was with started abusing the wanker. This happened on Legian St in Kuta just in front of ground zero. Two ausies ended up hospital with stab wounds after trying to break up a fight between locals that nearly killed one of their own kind inside a popular disco the next day. In Pattaya a Russian guy was slipped the mickey by bar girls that robbed him. It could have happened to any of us. In AC at least we know that girls are unlikely to drug us considering they can't afford it and they are all licensed anyway. We hear about people dieing but how often does it happen to one of us? It happens to bar owners and people involed in iligal activities, expats that live there and get involved too much with the locals and maybe cheat on their wifes or like to throw their weight and cash around? I don't remember a tourist and I am talking typical 21 day tourist ever to get killed. If you keep to yourself and remember why are you there then you will be fine. I rate AC much safer then many other simular or tourist palces around asia.

We hear about raids. Has anyone been through one? I know one guy but he was allowed to live right away. Those events are well targeted at bars / bar owners and the authorities know in advance who they are going after. They never bother the customers.

As for the odd ball extortion cases again we often here only one side of the story. Sure there are plenty of corrupt cops and bargirls but in general those events are VERY rare and most girls are SCARED of the police. A lot of the times the guy has brought it onto himself. People need to understand that you can't be an asshole in a foreign country and that $40 barfine is fuck all and from time to time be prepared to let it go. Treat them with respect and they will return the favour. Abuse them and sooner or latter you will run into one that will deal it back to you in spades.

I am not an AC fan, but I feel quite safe in AC main red light area. If one stays in the main area, I don't think safety is a concern. AC does not really have any total innocent tourist victim, almost all murders were targeted. I think Pattaya has more innocent killing of tourists than AC, and also Pattaya has lots of mysterious foreigners falling off the condos.

Several years back, I encountered an incident in Pattaya, I was staying on Jomtien Beach, Pattaya, and I was waken up by lots of sirens very early morning about 5 AM, later someone said 2 Russian ladies got shot to death on the beach in front of the hotel, at first the Thai authority was blaming the Russian mafia, but days later, it turned out to be senseless robbery by some Thai thugs. This was the only time that a murder happened so close to me, and it was in Pattaya.

So hang out with the crowds, that's the best precaution. Personally I feel safer walking in main area AC than walking anywhere in Rio, Chang Ping, Manila at night.

happy mongoring[/quote]we are tourists and as such cannot partake in local activities. even the expats for the most part stay away from local bars. the chances of getting into a fight is high if you visit local bars irrespective of girls are naked or not. these venues are strictly for locals and they want to keep it that away. they want prices to stay low not corrupted by weekend foreign millionares. right behind fields there are some local karaoke bars. it is fun if you have a local girl with you who knows somebody there. never pick up any girl there as she could be likely **** or have some disease and cannot get a job in foreigner oriented bars. although i should say some girls were really pretty and friendly. most mongers do frequent malls not necessarily to buy anything but to eat or with their barfinf gf. otherwise ac is strictly drink, fuck as many girls you want relax type of destination.

harry the horse has put an article saying he knows couple of customers detained on one of these raids. but there is no update of how and why it happened.

not heard of anybody else detained from the members on this forum.

although the percentage is very low of incidents, if it happens to you the percentage is 100. there is nothing worse than going on vacation and getting embroiled in ugly situations.
