LOL John, Aphrodites became Aphrodisiac. Reminds of the past of Hotel Melawai I. The name was Interhouse in those days but for obvious reasons it was known as Intercourse.

It's near Melawei on Jalan Melawei, last year while it was being built they hung a banner out saying it would open in July 2009, the banner is now gone, the hotel seems to be built but still not open, not sure what's going on there.

Their site seems to be working now. They have a twitter account which doesn't say much, but does have a phone number and some promo's listed.
Re Kaha. I know both Kaha's at blok M and Gambir and am happy with their offers. I will use them again. Even though some employees can be a bit cheeky to their own benefit, the result price may still work out better than internet hotel room providers. Knowing some online hotel room rates before buying a voucher helps.

Cikini is an area of Jakarta; Delilah(?) and Aphrodite are clubs/bars. Delilah tends to cater more for Arabs but there are some interesting girls at very reasonable prices. Aphrodite is less commercial but not without possibilities. The girls will however take advantage if they even get a slight whiff of a Jakarta newbie. Take heed of all the advice given in the Jakarta forum...

could anybody help me to find a centrally located budget hotel in Jakarta ? It should be safe and clean. The rooms should have a safety deposit box inside. My budget is between 30 and 40 USD per night.
I do not want to go to Jalan Jaksa.

I don't think what you are looking for exists. Hotels with in-room safes are more expensive. Hotel Atlet Century is centrally located, in the Senayan area, just south of Jalan Jaksa (Jalan Jaksa is just south of Monas, right in the center of Jakarta). Rates are about $60+tax. They have a safe in the room. There are a number of hotels in the city center, also near Monas, and they have in-room safes, but they are high-end hotels, $80 and up.
If you don't mind staying out of the way, try Traveler's Hotel:

I got a Deluxe room there for $45 net. Free buffet breakfast, clean hotel and rooms (no pool), a bar, excercise room, and a safe in the room. They upgraded me to a business-class room upon check-in. Its quiet and out-of-the-way. Manga Besar area, between city central and Ancol in the northeast. Not far from Sparks Hotel, and not far from Stadium disco. I think it used to be called Quality Inn (or similar). Not to be confused with Hotel Travel (which is also nearby).

If cheaper hotels do not have an in-room safe is it at least safe to leave valuables with the reception desk ?

Try IBIS hotels, there are a few of them, probably Tamarin is best
I got the Crowne Plaza for $25 a night. However, that special us no longer bookable.

Yes, they are safe. You can find IBIS hotels for under $40, and possibly with free breakfast. Rooms are not big, but the hotels are clean/safe.
