For those of us living here in Vietnam, it's not so much that we don't want to be generous to people like this, its more that we understand their mindset: rather than appreciating your tip or liking you for it, they simply think you are foolish or even stupid. I had a chance to stay in HCM for a day and had a great time there. In help of some articles here, I visited Benny's & Korean Barbershop.

I arrived at the airport at around 2pm. So I decided to go to Korean Barbership St. Directly. It was 20 minutes walk from the airport.

I can read Korean, so I've heard that kkokbat barbershop, jangmi, eunhangnamu etc. I looked around the area and I could find all of them. I saw really attractive girl in front of. Hopefully this post is useful to anybody. I have been to the familiar places mentioned before on this forum: Benny's, My Tien, Korean Town, Nguyen Phi Khanh. Context: I monger during the day as I have limited time and sometimes I have no transport available to me so prefer sticking to place which are close to my surroundings. I live near the airport. I am European and only know several sentences of Vietnamese.

Judgement on Benny's:/5.

As I value my privacy, I hate having to wait with others, even if its a select few occupying the barber shop style chairs near the cubicles. I was always guided in a straight line to the cubicles, never have I taken a left turn or was I guided to one of the cubicles there. I do not know if they are VIP, bigger or whatever but you can see them once you enter one of the other cubicles. The chairs are pretty comfortable but most of the cubicles are quite small. I think BJ is the standard in this place, do not think anybody only has a HJ in this place. BJ is CIM. Price is 300. 000 for me, I think you can get away with less but I really did not want to turn back after having gone there so I had an argument with some ***** in a really bad mood behind the counter but she refused to go down, told me to * off if I did not want to pay it. Price was 350. 000 for me, I asked them why and they simply said you are a foreigner thus you pay more. Service was varied but that depends on what you want, same goes for Benny's. This street is risky for me as most people travelling from Vo Thi Sau to Hai Ba Trung will race trough Nguyen Phi Khanh as its a good shortcut. Secondly, I do not like this street a lot as I mentioned I am a daytime mongerer and its easier to get exposed here then on Dien Bien Phu where heavy traffic provides cover. All these places look really shabby, worse than My Tien. Some places have stunners some places have people so ugly they should be paying people to have sex with them. So I guess safety wise this place is the worst as they probably get more locals. I know its small money to any of us on this forum, but please allow me to put it in perspective for you.

That attendant doesn't make more than VND2,5M - VND3,0M salary a month. Your tip of VND 100.000 is equivalent to an entire day's wages for him. The Vietnamese are inherently not as 'proactive' and not as savvy about customer service as other more 'developed' places in Asia. The next time some foreigner goes to Vien Dong, the same attendant would expect him to be a similar unknowing foreigner and expect a similar tip, since he can make a whole day's wages out of a 'stupid foreigner' from that one tip. If not, he would either i. Not bother giving any level of customer service, or ii. Show some displeasure on his face which the customer ends up having to put up with, or iii. Give undue upsell pressure to the customer to tip him, when a tip should be purely voluntary.

No, you have not ruined mongering in Saigon for everyone, but you have perpetuated the problem with 'tipping' in this country. A tip should be a reward for service above and beyond what is expected. But you tipped the idiot his entire day's wages for doing what he was supposed to do, nothing more.

I think the problems mentioned on this forum are the tip of the iceberg, the people who report over paying on here despite having read the forum are not what we should worry about. It is the people who have never heard of the forum and might thing that 500 or 1 mill is amazing value for a BJ relative to their home country.

I think the solution to this is to go regularly to the same place, then people will know that you know the local price and will have no expectation that you are going to overpay like a noob. So expectations are met, then if you get incredible service and pay 50k extra it is understood and appreciated as it should be, not assumed that you are a stupid foreigner with too much dong.
