No you don't need to buy a lot of train ticket.
There's option to buy only one ticket, which lets you stay up to 10 days at each station/city on transsiberian railway. For example you can exit at Novosibirsk and stay there for 10 day and then continue to Vladivostok on the same ticket. I went on transiberian 23 times and always did this way.
Ticket you need to buy at least one month (the earlier the better) before your trip. If you decide to get a ticket few days before the trip you won't get any.
If you have company (like a girl) then get a sleeping coupe. But if you're alone then get a platskartny especially if you can speak russian. This way you will meet all kinds of people. Men will offer you to drink, older females will feed you and girls - it depends on you. If your russian sucks then forget about this, you can easily get robbed and there's always cops on the train who will see financial opportunity in you.

You can get in any city and stay up to 10 days in each of them and then continue. The ticket is valid for 120 days.
City/train stations must be on the main transsiberian railway in which the train usually stops. The condition is to buy Moscow-Vladivostok only and not for example Moscow-Novosibirsk and then continue from there.
There are 10 major cities/trainstations between Moscow and Vladivostok. Theoretically if you stay 10 days in each of them it will be 100 days enough to use your ticket.
This option is ulmost unknown among foreigners and no body use it. Problem is visa because time exceeds 90 day visa. Even if you have 30 day visa you can stay like 2 days in each city.
This option is remain from soviet times, the action was called "Know your country to love it more".

Kurenda, thanks for the info...I'm not sure we looked at this option and rejected it for some reason, or completely overlooked it, but I'll keep it in mind for any future trips.

Sweep - it was two summers ago.

Chercheur - buy the tickets and book the hotels well in advance, especially in the summer. Then again, you could just go where the wind blows. I have turned up at the train station and the airport and bought a ticket on the first train or plane that I could get a seat on. There's always an adventure to be had somewhere.

I've also done a Volga cruise...I'll save that story for another time!

There are reasons not to go to your dev's hometown, but temps are not among them. However, in Mf-gorsk I stayed in the worst hotel I have ever seen -- in Africa, Latin America, U.S. and Asia, and the old Soviet Union. Didn't even have a toilet seat.
Your sponsorless dev should never be required to return to that hellhole.

Can't say that I am missing home much, or America's favorite pastime, fall classic bullshit or whatever. I'm enjoying the glorius motherland's favorite pastime, being knee deep in sweet gushy stuff.

Took me an entire 10 days to hit the big jackpot, but after following the Doctor Skank rule of thumb, I waited for the 3rd date, and walked Lera into the bedroom, and BAM! God Almighty, she has saved my mother-fucking ass from the brink of doom.

Not that I haven't been quite busy with numerous highly enjoyable alternatives, but this piece of candy was simply extraoridinary. Took me back farther than I can rightly remember, to those heydays on the strip when my phone never stopped ringing for spinners in need of accomodations and a pizza. Lera is about as perfect as they come. In at 1:00 and out at 4:00.

To top off the day, Nataly showed up at 9:00, looking like a dead ringer for a teenage version of Melanie Griffith, and with the most incredible tits I've slurped since the amazing Ukrainian blondinka Alla had back in '03.

The bad news for all you bastards from hell, is that I am having the absolute worst trip ever, when it comes to photo opportunities, and modeling. For some reason, I have had virtually every dyevushka turn down any and all offers to do some modeling, so unless something really changes in the next few weeks, you guys are going to be completely in the dark, and I have bought a brand new camera for nothing. This place is really, well, there's just nothing good enough I can say, to put it into words. Have to go jump in the shower, Zhenya is meeting me in an hour across the street with her girlfriend. This will be expensive, sure, but what the hell, I've only spent half what I thought I would by now. Not one girl has asked for hardly anything extra so far, so I'm way behind, and can afford to go wild now.

It makes no difference where you are in Russia, once you get out of Moscow or St. Pete. The clod is even bothering me anymore, its actually the heat that fucks me up. Every store, shop, office, apartment, is always set at 78 to 80 degrees, and no ventilation, so I break out in a sweat, no matter where I go. Well fuck it, it helps draw out all the poisons. That, and blasting massive loads all over these tartar girls. God bless them.

I have to post an update.

Things are getting really interesting now. As luck would have it, with the standard russian wierd twists and turns, I let someone who I should have known better to avoid, take advantage of my generosity and good nature.

She was someone that proposed to find me something a few steps above the standard 1500 ruble agency dyevs, which is always my primary goal, bu she tried to talk me into 10,000 rubles, about $330, for an all-night date with a supposedly good girl, some student from the institute, 20 year old blondinka. Not that that's a bad deal, but it just sounded suspicious, so.........

I passed, as I was working on some other endeavor that evening. When I tried with this chick from mamba again, to see if there was any other possibilities for a little less, the hag-slag slammed me and said I'd be better off with cheap prosititutes. Where'd she get the nerve to insult me, and how could she mis-judge the Bez-meister so completely wrong. Nobody spreads the wealth more then I do, I mean, really, what the fuck.

Anyway, she shows up with some skank, and I told her that she'll really have to come up with something better.

So the next night, she shows up with a 19 year old blondinka, pretty tight looking body, with a face that was nothing special. She hits me up for 4000, for the hook-up , and then tells me that I should give the blondinka about 10,000! I paid the hag to get her annoying ass to go away, and then all the crap I was expecting started to go down. The blond is playing very coy, don't do this, don't touch me there, I've got problems, bla bla bla.

Well, I assumed I just got set up, especially when this girl starts crying. And then I ask her, how long do you know the hag? Oh, they just met today on the internet!! Turns out, that the blond was simply on the rag, a very bloody mess. I managed to only smear one piece of linen with her red visitor, and then told her, well, I'm only giving you half, and here comes the tears again. Oh, the hag told me we were only going to a cafe to talk, not have sex!! Oh, I need more money than 5000 to pay for all my school, bla bla. Did she really think she was getting screwed? 5000 is still a lot, and with the 4000 I paid to the hag, that's $300 for a very messy quicky, I think I'm the one who should be crying.

But then, here comes the russian mystery! Turns out, blondinka has LOTS of friends, and her friends have friends too. All from the institute. So we decide that Bez is gonna pay for all her school needs, by blondinka introducing me to Katya, Dasha, Yula, and some other styudenka tomorrow night.

Just when you think, you fucked it all up, this place does a big 180, and it all falls in your fucking lap!
