Hi!
I will be staying at the Victory Guangzhou. I just bought a notebook computer and would like to know if the hotel provides a converter?
Anyone have any thoughts.
Thanks
And whilst this is NOT fool-proof, I prefer to just use bank ATM to withdraw RMB's - which gives pretty fair exchange rate. In Hong Kong, just look for those ATM's which advertises "RMB Notes Available," while in China, all ATM withdrawals will of course be denominated in RMB automatically.

Another note of caution,
I had gotten fake bills out of an ATM near Gypsy King, from one of those lesser known banks (might had been Everest Bank, not sure now), so nowadays I only get cash out of the few big bank ATMs, like HSBC, BOC, Construction, Commerce etc.

Iīve had friends (both Chinese and foreigners) getting fake bills out of ATMīs in obscure places.. I always stick to ICBC or BOC myself and have never been bitten.
This is what I do aswell.. Only ATM.
The only drawback is that thereīs a 15000RMB withdraw limit per week on both my VISA and Mastercard.
I BELIEVE that the maximum amount of withdrawal can be varied by your instructions to the bank. At least that is what I did and told them how much is my daily withdrawal limit.
On the other hand, do you REALLY want to go around China with more than RMB 15k in CASH.... Each day?? what in the world would you/could you spend it on??
Just wondering....... REALLY wondering!!! LOL!!
This may sound a bit stupid, but ...
This is my second trip to Asia. In the first trip, many years ago, I had a great 2 hour massage in bangkok. No dirty business. I remember leaving the massage place very relaxed.
Is there such a thing in Guangzhou? Is that common?
Thanx,
Bart
Your first question was for "action" around Elan hotel - and your second question is for a veggie massage!! What is it that you really want?
And a veggie massage is available at most places - all you have to do is to specify such..... and they'lll come up with some old dinosaur to do you!!

SEAJ,
Actually I will be in Guangzhou for 10 days. I want both! I want action but the "veggie massage" (2 hours) I had in Thailand was so great that I want it again!
Anyway, it is important I find action around Elan Hotel (New Mainland Hotel) too.
Thanks

If I go to places like Tang, Paddy Field, Karma at 8 or 9 PM, will there be anyone?
Are there any clubs that open early?
Is it easy to get a cab when leaving?
Thanx

Paddy will have more people earlier as most office people go there after work. Maybe no WG that early but you may want to pick up freebies? Almost everybody at Paddy will speak English.
For Tang, no body will be there that early, has to be at least 10pm. As for Kama, definitely nobody, best to be after 1AM.
Cabs in cities will all just wait outside such clubs at night as there are no other places to find business. If a club has no cab outside at night, it means only one thing, that it has been closed down!

Please report on what you find around that area. I am sure that hotel has a legit sauna, and as I pointed out in another post, you need to prepare with cash on you so that if you like the girl and want more, you can negociate and pay her directly, as I think most hotels inside the city only provide "veggie" services on the book. Not that they are not very relaxing, they usually are, especially when you pay for extra hours, typically will have tougue licking full body etc, still considered veggie.

Hi all,
I will be reaching Guangzhou on the 7th April morning.
Could not open ISG forum last time I was in Guangzhou.
Any suggestions about proxy sites or way to open ISG site there, are welcome.
Thanks

As far as I remember, any 4 star or above usually had a 110v socket, in the bathroom. Other wise, 99% of laptops made in the last 5 years are 110/220 compatible. just read the big block of power supply see if its got the 220v sign. or 210v etc.
Its that time of the year, going to GZ for that Canton fair thingy. Planning to hit CP or CA from 19th to 23rd. Anyone in the area then? PM me. Or if you plan to venture in Guangzhou city, would love to tag-along if possible. Looking to hit KTV at least once. Its really not worth it to go with just 1 or 2 people. 3+ is the best.
By the way, has Guangzhou started the clean up ritual before the canton fair already?

For a Proxy you can try using: https://www.junglemill.com/
However, when I was in ShenZhen and GuangZhou (Victory Hotel) last week, they didn't work. I went to Junglemill then typed in the ISG URL and the result was that I was redirected to some other website/page (I forget the name of it, but something about Linux and webhosting, I think).
I should have gotten a trace of of the HTTP traffic, but didn't because I was in a hurry. I am wondering if (some of) the Chinese DNS servers are overriding all requests to junglemill (and other such proxy sites) to return a 'false' junglemill homepage to the user, then intercepting the requests sent to false junglemill homepage to see if the requested URL is on a banned list. When I tried to go to http://www.google.com using Junglemill I also had some problem.
You might want to consider having a backup list of some public DNS Servers, then custom-configure the DNS entries on your laptop Network Configuration (do not use the Automatic DNS configuration), then go to junglemill to see if you then get the REAL junglemill website and can then get to ISG. Search internet for "public dns server".
Here are a couple public DNS servers to try:
Cisco (San Jose, CA, US)
64.102.255.44
128.107.241.185

Most (all!?) Laptop power supplies today support both 110/220 volt, and 50/60 Hz electricity.
Look at your Laptop power adapter. Mine says: "INPUT: 100 - 240V, 50-60 Hz", so it works all around the world.
However, sometimes in China (and always in Hong Kong), I have to get a prong-adapter which changes the shape of the metal prongs.
This website can help you find it:
http://www.kropla.com/electric2.htm
You will need TYPE G for Hong Kong, and TYPE I for China.

Folks beware of not use any sensitive websites on proxys. remember there are proxy servers out there that are built to see what you send over the internet.
