I want to add my kudos to McDon's insightful and amusing reports. They were thoroughly entertaining and I look forward to more of them.

Being about the same age as Gangles, I started to wonder whether some of the differences in perspectives and criteria for satisfaction with this or that city isn't somewhat related to age. I know when I was (much) younger, I was like the proverbial kid in the candy store, wanting to sample as much of each variety of candy as I could swallow during intermitten sojourns in various countries. I too, always felt pressed by time.

My needs, or perhaps my viewpoints, have changed with age and I'm no longer as frenetic when hitting a different city or country. The interest is still there, but it's more measured and much less intense. I'm not at all disparaging the younger guys by sayinig this. They have energy and the newness of discovery on their side.

I took a taxi and I knew almost to the pesos what the charge should be. At least the normal range because.

There can be some variation with how they drive and the route.

But on one taxi I was very familiar with the cost.

At the end of the trip I saw it was at least 100 pesos overcharge.

I told the driver that I knew it was not accurate and that I know what the rate should be.

He then told me to pay what ever I thought was the right fair.

No arguement no anger. I paid him less then full fare and he said.

I still gave him a tip.

When I first came to Philippines it was Singapore to cebu.

An owner of a large fleet of taxis lives in my condo. He told me that his drivers are on instant dismissal if they try to tamper with the meter which is difficult to do anyway without giving it away.

In your case you knew the fare so you were able to call him on it.

Are you sure it was set on zero (40 php) when you started?

I was 'caught' one day after we had gone around 200 meters by the meter showing 80php because the driver "forgot" to stop and restart the meter from previous fare. I think it was a genuine mistake by the driver (hehe don't laugh) because he said "sorry Sir, just deduct 40 php from the fare when we arrive". I suspect it was a clever way to get extra cash AND at the same time to give him an easy way to save face if I caught him which I did. No aggro at all on either side.

Cebu needs a week or more if your here for a few days stick to bars if you have the cash go to arena my girls are arena quality girls. The barfine there is 8000. AC is developing quite quickly folks. There is a new hotel that is almost done in the middle of fields. Another White house / hospital in Thai style. Rumor has it that it's the Louise and Grant group behind it. A new hotel near the ABC is also almost done, with work on it 24/7. Further down in perimeter Air Asia is building Tune Hotel which if I remember well is due to open up around May. It would be a great addition to those that are after clean and basic accommodation if it turns out like the other Tunes. Air Asia occasionally has crazy specials like rooms for $1 so I think this one may be worth keeping an eye on it. The airport works in AC and Cebu is also coming to an end. In AC they still land the planes far from the bridges so one has to wonder what was the point of even building them but hey maybe in few months they will be fully functioning.

As oppose to last two times (September and October) I saw a big increase in customers. Perhaps with typhoon season ending more people are willing to make the trip but it was noticeable. Bars were fuller and on the street there was far more people. Fields or Don Juico Ave has now traffic issues, I know it's a narrow street and there was jams before but never like this. It took 20 minutes from ABC to the Jollibee around 4. 30 – 5pm. With the addition of few more hotels I think things are about to get worse.

I think more likely the girl has come from Talisay or Toledo on the other side of Cebu island or even from Danao or further north and the meter reading would be accurate by the time they reached where you were picked up. Drivers often cut through that street near SM Mall coming from Mactan so I doubt it is a set up.

To be honest I don't remember if the guy had an old or new meter but I saw what I saw. He handed the girl a 100 peso bill, one of the 3 with which I paid him. She didn't deny it when I asked her to pay for her entrance to Julianas either. I wish I never saw it but I did. Who knows what happened but I just didn't like the idea that they thought that they conned me. Interesting part is that she was the nicest one in Julianas when we walked in. I should have taken her but I decided to check few other places around and that was it. It was a great experience in future I need to chill and maybe let go of small silly stunts like this one and just seize the opportunity.
