Like many Filipino cultural oddities we discuss here ("up to you", saving face, scamming) , tipping is a westernized cultural oddity that seems burned into many of us. Some people feel the need to give to service providers (waitress, mechanic, paper boy, girlfriend). While its a foreign concept to many asians, for many westerners it seems burned into the psyche. You just can't stop it. The gents will tip whatever they tip. I was about to write, just now, that its really none of your (or my) business what another gent tips (it feels that way) , but really it is, because as you say it drives up expectations and costs for the rest of us.

A related story of over-tipping. A while back in AC, I took two Santos girls. After the session we went out for a drink. While watching the dancing show, the girls shared that one of them had only been in the bar for two weeks, and I was only her second customer (she is very pretty, and previously posted in PG, looks like and voice sounds a bit like actress Fran Drescher). The expectation has been created (by me, at p50, by the fat guy at p5000 / no sex, and by anyone who tips anything). You will do one of two things: 1) get mad, hand her 300, and boot her; or 2) get mad, increase to 500 or so, and boot her. Personally, I'd argue that we all stop tipping completely. But even if all us ISG's did that, there are so many other guys who go their who will keep tipping (its engrained). Others have argued that we should tip large: the best babes will go to the highest bidder (tipper). I can see both arguments. Like teetotalers who try to stop people from drinking booze, tipping is something that can't be stopped.

Because I think what you did leaving 50p for a Tip was cheap and border line insulting. 50p is what you leave a waitress or a bar tender for a tip. It's a service you fly to another country to get. But it only deserves 50p tip? Eeek! .

Forget the custom of the place. They are not the ones flying to seek the pleasure. You are. And the way a person from a western upbringing shows his appreciation for services is with a tip. That's his custom.

I used to be of the same mindset as you until I realized. How much difference. So little. Can mean to one of them. And how little it really amounted to me.

Now I tip outrageous by your standards. I'll give a waitress 25p to 100p. A girl never leaves my room with less than 500p no more than 1500. 200p minimum for short time to 500p

And this has nothing to do with whether we have meals, barhop, see a movie. The money is the tip for my appreciation. Period.

Maybe some guys feel the girls deserve appreciation and money is their best way of showing it.

But as you stated in the beginning both views think they are right so. Nothing will ever change. There will always be those who think others tip too much. And vice versa.

I wouldn't worry too much about tipping as I would with the overall attitude of the girls in question its always a good rule to get things up front, so their are no high expectations. Now this is a little hypocritcal when mongers like myself use lots of sweet words and false promises to get in those panties but from a mongers perspective knowing what your getting into before you pull the trigger is a good start, price, tip all I would suggest be discussed up front.

Not just barfine repeats, but they often want to come over and spend the night after their shift ends. Some want only a meal (I always buy breakfast) , some are fine with 500. I'm sure the extra tip money is important to the girl, but its money only: There must be something that keeps them coming over (sometimes bringing a friend).

If you give a girl a p1000 tip in the morning for good service, chances are you won't see her again, and even if you do she'll expect it again. If you give her nothing, chances are you'll never see her again? Tell me again, what's the upside of the tip?

Spoke to a couple of birds last night and one bird told me that bar fine was 3000 (dlbe the norm) can't remember bar name but it was one of them opposite Kokomos and the other chick said they had to stay in bar all night? I tip that's just what I do because in my opinion its the appropriate thing to do. Now Mr. Pink from reservoir dogs with disagree, my attitude is if a waitress can get a 7 to 15 bucks for bringing you food why not give a chick a few bucks for a good sex session. American prices, Really? Compare AC-Manila or AC-Cebu or maybe even AC-SEA then you have an equal comparison. What someone pays in Vegas or California has no direct bearing on tipping in AC unless you are willing to move AC to Vegas.

Secondly It's guys who visit AC for a week every year or guys who fly in from other SEA destinations for a weekend that distort the reality of local market prices. They spend like drunken sailors and throw money around because they are living for the moment and tipping and barfine structure be dammed. The only downside to those actions are felt by the guys who spend 200+ days a year in the Philippines or guys who live there. These guys generally do not throw too much money around on a daily basis because they average it out over a much longer time frame.
