i and members of my team arrived in hat yai from bangkok via the railway. please remember this bit of advice good mongers - always book your sleeper well ahead, and always in the middle of the car. it is thus quieter and smoother than the end berths over the banging wheels. we arrived well rested.

so, my advice to travelers in the south - bring a fairly large mongering budget, and enjoy the curries.

1. General
Located 260 kms NE from Bangkok, the large Thai city of Khorat has a lot to offer to the noble cause of sex-tourism. Often called the "gateway to Isaan region", indeed this is the place where real nice and friendly people start to appear, like the many more you will meet all over Isaan. Khorat is a major Thai city with all the conveniences of good value accomodation, modern shopping malls and good sex-scene.

2. Travel
The usual entry point is through Bangkok. Buses leave from Bangkok's Mo Chit bus terminal every 30 minutes. The trip takes about 3 1/2 hrs in airconditioned comfort. Depending on the service, you will arrive either at Khorat's new or old bus stations. The old one is right in the city heart. The new one is about 2 kms north, a short 40-50 B ride by tuk-tuk. (Notes: Baht is the Thai currency. USD$1=33B. Tuk-tuk is a motorized trishaw, kind of local taxi.) Of course as being a major transport center, there are frequent bus services from Khorat to anywhere in Thailand such as Udontani, Ubon or Konken. These three also being some more very "liberating" sex-experience venues for men.
Khorat is also on the railway line. There are services from Bangkok, Chiangmai and Udontani. However bus service is more regular. The short distance from Bangkok hardly justifies a flight.
Local transport in Khorat is by scheduled minibus (songtaew), tuk-tuk and motorcycle taxi. All are plentiful all day and night. Fares start at 20-30B. (1USD$=33B)

3. Accomodation, food, etc
The city center boasts an ample supply of accomodation options, hotel rooms ranging from 200B to 800B. All within walking distance to most sex-venues you are likely to frequent. We will not recommend any in particular, as there are so many. You can obtain good free city maps from the well organized tourist info office, somewhat west of the Khorat Mall shopping center.
Khorat Mall has a great variety of cheap Thai and international foodshops. So has the Lotus S/C nearby and Klang Plaza in the city heart. Apart from these, restaurants are plentiful all around town but some may only open for lunch or dinner. Some foodstalls set up in the evening near the railway station and there is a smallish night market inside the moat.
If you fancy swimming, the Khorat Mall has a great swimming complex, tickets 80B for all day and some extra for a locker. This gets very crowded on weekends. Public safety, as in most Thai cities, is not a major issue. You can walk safely anywhere, anytime. Crossing the busy roads can be a scary experience though. (Yet, still much better than Indonesia for example.)

4. Other things to do
Apart from swimming and wandering the shopping malls, Khorat is an interesting historical city with many old buildings and attractive wats, especially in the old quarter inside the moat. (Note: "Wat" means a buddhist temple.) Outside town there is some nature and traditional villages to discover and the tourist office can assist in these.

5. Khorat Sex-Scene

You just point, show and buy. Not much chatting with women is involved at any stage. You are safe here. Here is the story of one particular sex-trip: After checking in to a reasonable hotel, went to have a look at the Mall. Despite of the above, business is still quite professional here. We arrived abit too early, like 7pm. In the back of the building there is a setup that resembles a cheap soapie. Women of all descriptions sitting on red carpeted stairs, behind glass. While it is a heart-warming sight to see them like that every time, here the choice was very limited to just 4 pcs. Reason being that most would arrive only after 9pm or so. There is a price list on the wall (in Thai) 250/350/500 B, depending on the quality. But because you come by taxi and you are farang, you must add another 100B to these (still cheap, less than $20). Interesting enough place so I promised to come back later. We jumped on the tuk-tuk again, heading east towards the moat. Our #2 stop was one karaoke style establishment inside the moat, just opposite the Fitness Park. Sign in Thai only: Juosa.
Here again one very nice Thai gentleman was the reception, motioning us inside. Setup is similar to the previous, that of a cheap version of soapie with fishbowl and women. Prices on the wall, 250-500B/pop depending on meat-quality. Add 100B farang/taxi supplement. They had some females in there but still not the full lineup. I would go and look again later. Nevermind, my friendly and smiling tuk-tuk driver was happy to continue our entertaining trip. It was already very much fun as of course the adventure of visiting these places and negotiating with nice Thai pimp gentlemen to buy women was worth much more than sex. But sex was on the cards too and I knew I had to do it, just for the experience. Not because I like it so much. We drove ever further, outside the moat, arriving at a large open-air restaurant with sign in Thai again : Talejai, or similar.

My choice for 400B was good value again, beating Pattaya. And so easy, no chatting, no brain damage. Just pointing and choosig: "I want that one. How much?". I loved it. Surely you will too. And did not have to fight or compete with other guys. Even more important. It makes peace and promotes love. Love is good.

6. Conclusion
So, this was quite a fascinating night in Khorat. The next few days were spent with discovering the cultural sights and having a few roots at the same brothels, purchasing women, for cheap prices. It is called: "Cultural Sex-Tourism". It was awesome, Khorat is recommended. As is Konken, Udon, Ubon and the others. Only place I could not get laid was Pattaya. It is a total wasteland in terms of sex. So went back to Korat and Udon again as soon as possible.

Mukdahan, Thailand 2008 report

Thai bordertown, one of the main gateways to Laos. Sitting on the Mekong river, it is quite an interesting place to wander around for a day or two. And it surely has quality "entertainment" for us old, ugly, deprived sex-tourist too.
2. / Travel
From Konken, Udonthani, Kalasin or Ubon Rachatani several daily bus departures. From Nakonpanom bus every hour. From Mahasarakam bus every 20 minutes. The distance to Bangkok is over 600kms and the trip takes 10 hours. There is no train service. The Mukdahan bus station is 2kms out of town, next to the Tesco Lotus shopping center. If you want to walk, just turn left at the station entrance.
After one kilometer you will see a sign pointing to your right: "Mukdahan 1km". That road leads to the town and riverfront. If you have a Lao visa, you can also board the international bus at the bus terminal, straight to Sawannaket, across the river. If you need to buy visa on the border, this bus will not wait for you. In that case you must use private transport, or a boat (Lao 15 day visas available at the boat-landing).

Near the town center and riverfront several hotels 200-500B. The truly exceptional nigthmarket is also in this area. Lots of great food. For restaurants during the day the road leading to the Mukdahan tower is best.

4. / Entertainment
*** The scene ***
Mukdahan does have a good night scene, however few of the cheap brothels. Quality is very good in terms of young fresh girls but prices somewhat higher than usual. Count on at least 700B+/pop. Plus in Mukdahan it takes some extra effort as well, unfortunately. You will see why.
The Mukdahan red-light area is the easiest to find. You can see it from anywhere in town. Because all located right under the Mukdahan Tower.
Called "Ho Keo Mukdahan" in Thai. Distance about one mile from the center. You can walk, it is a safe well lit busy road. Or a samlo costs 40B. The area is lined with karaoke shops and massage joints. (However when you see the big love hearts on the door of a massage place, it makes you wonder about the type of the massage.)
The first time I went there I asked for ST fuck right away. Which isn't the right thing to do here. They all quoted 1500-2000B, with a minimum of 1200. Massage only is 150-200B for 2 hours. Rather strange. But Mukdahan is a sort of repressed city, so probably bribes to police are higher than elsewhere. This is what the law does. Never eliminates the dirt but keeps well fed the soldiers repressing it. (And not only in Thailand, but anywhere. Because even if police does not take bribes as cash, they still live from the law-enforcement. So their wages are their bribe.)
*** Good quality ***
Many of the girls are great beauties, young 18-20years, mixed Lao and Thai workers. So, while this made me thinking for a cheaper solution I asked a taxi driver for something else. We drove not very far, just about halfway back to town on a parallel road. Then at the "Kyang Piman" hotel sign we turned left. Again right into a small soi. It's a lonely brothel. Called "Soi Kroong" (or similar). As we parked, one ugly girl came out. My driver asked her the price for ST. Girl says 200B. Then driver communicates to me: "300B". I look inside, about 4-5 young girls sitting by the wall.

Took a taxi to the Thai brothel and had another one of the reasonable looking girls for 400B. Not such as a stunner as the Lao but still third of the price. Interesting night out, and best of all I was in bed by 10pm, getting a gorgeous sleep again. Beats any fuck by miles.

As you can see, there are lots of interesting things to keep you occupied in Mukdahan for a few days. And the town is not that bad either. The food is absolutely a winner and there are very attractive females available for degrading commercial roots. All cheaper than "free". Makes you wonder, why anyone would want it for "free" when they can get it for $20. It's all good, so get into it while it's hot. Sex-tourism rules and is good for the world. You will be a "hero" in Mukdahan.
