A buddy claims he gave a lovely Rainbow girl 1000 for an overnight recently, and I have no reason to think he would lie about it. I think they hadn't discussed prices before departing. You are right, taxi meters haven't been increased for at least 12 years, maybe much longer. They were the same when petrol was 10 Baht a liter, then at rates of 60 Baht to the dollar petrol was around 20 baht a liter. Now it is 30 Baht.
I remember that the Thai postage rates were doubled overnight many years ago because they had forgotten to incerease the price for maybe a decade. I wonder when that is going to happen again.

If the baht weren't so absurdly high petrol would be even more dear! Of course, almost all of the taxis are burning gas now, which is both because Thailand has good supplies of natural gas, and also because it burns a lot cleaner (when are they going to get new buses? I saw one the other day, but so far only one). I believe there is a rate hike scheduled, and even so taxis will probably remain a bargain. I always tip unless the driver turns out to be a real wanker, which is unusual if not unheard of- but I don't double the meter!
I'm glad you didn't take offense at my reply. I was kind of hoping to hear what others on the board think of the current pricing- not only in regard what the market will bear here, but particularly in terms of what, say, a 3000 baht LT fee in Bangkok equals in terms of spending power in Europe or the States. If I compare, for example, what a security guard makes here with what good Nana or Cowboy earner is making, I wonder if it wouldn't compare with what the average escort makes in comparison with a security guard in Miami or London. If a Sukhumvit go-go tart clears 6000 baht for two nights work she has pretty much made her rent + utilities if she lives in Ratchada or On Nut- and double her rent if she is living with a roommate, which most do. Let's say a Florida call girl clears US$1000 for two nights (or days) work- she probably hasn't made rent for month yet, unless she has a roommate.
Just throwing this out there for discussion. While I don't think 3000 for LT is reasonable for a Nana tart, especially on top of drinks and bar fine, I'm not a tourist on holiday- and to quote the Lone Biker of the Apocalypse, a fair price is 'Not what you say, but what the market will bear.' Problem is, judging by the number of girls still waiting (presumably) for an overnight john at closing time, the market isn't exactly bearing it most nights. Of course, it may be that they would prefer to try to work half as much for the same money. . .but I wonder if that is working out for them. At any rate, a bar girl pulling down, say, 20K a month is already making roughly twice what a secretary would and the same as a starting attorney in Bangkok (at a Thai firm); although it must be said, her career is liable to be far shorter, and only the lucky few are able to pull the long con and snag a farang or Japanese sugar daddy.
As I said, curious to read the opinions of others about this, and I also think it might be edifying for the tourists (and I have nothing against them- kind of wish I still were one) to know what 3K (or 1 or 2K) means in terms of spending power in this town.

The base rate will stay at 35. But, the meters are now being reconfigured and the rate/distance is being shortened so that the meter will turn over more frequently.
Are all working and free-lancers in Bangkok are Thai girls?
We are contemplating a two-day side trip to the Philippines during this trip. I was in Thailand 10 years ago and remember it being mostly Thais. Not much variety. Has that changed over the years?
