Balcony is a hit or miss joint. It's not pigeon hole-able the way many Asian or European cities are. For Rio, read Bubba's Guide and then Spertos listings, which you can find easily enough on the forum.

SP and RJ are very different. I find SP more intense in an international-city-sort of way. Rio is intense but in a fun way. People in SP work hard. If I dare generalise, one might say people in Rio work in order to go down to the beach.

I've been going to Rio for years and it is an easy city to love. I am still trying to get a grip of SP, but my enthusiasm for the place is different. Rio has the power to transport you to a sort of Disneyland where reality takes on a whole different meaning.

However there are always people to whom money is not the biggest consideration and the termas continue unabated with occasional hiccups. The private establishments offer quite good value for money, but the main reason to visit Rio or any other Brasilian city IMHO is if you love the place.

Regarding the forum, the main interest seems to be for the upper end establishments, judging by quantity of posts. That doesn't interest me or some of the other former posters. Neither do I care to push info on the cheap end. Details are there on the forum for those that want it. I've no desire to get flamed for my tastes just for mentioning it. Everyone to their own.

Tbh most of what needs to be posted, has. The occasional big changes like Help closing are news. A Rs20 diference on a Rs400+ punt is of interest to aficionados.

The majority of men would stay in one small section of Copa and only venture out to hit some of the major termas. Copacabana is dead now! With Help being gone, Meia Pataca being on life support, skanks and rip off artists at Balcony and even "Hoe Beach" not having any females, there really isn't any reason to rent an apartment in Copa. If you are going to Rio for the girls, it makes sense to stay in the downtown area.
