There will be stages and bands on the Malecon. It's a good time. The crowd control is much better in recent years than it used to be. I would not build a visit around it because it is not the center of attention the way the Puerto Plata Merengue Festival always is.

Sound like a good plan?

Is there stuff during the week, on Wed / Th, or is it only on the weekends?

Sorry about the needling, but I can't find ANYTHING about the festival online. Not even the dates, much less a schedule of concerts. And it is only 2-3 weeks away! Is it always like this? The festival gets talked up in all the travel books, but it doesn't seem like something the DR Board of Tourism takes seriously.

Also, what do you think of me driving from SDQ to POP? Is it an easy drive? Or should I take the bus there, then pick up a car in POP? If taking the bus, is Metro Tours better than Caribe?

I am very sure this is the same guy I had locked up for pulling this scam on me. He uses attractive girls to get you in the shop. He then trys to dump truck shit on you that you do not want. His shop was right on el Conde but was shut down on my last visit. He runs this game on unsuspecting tourist. He trys to use no english to blame you for the miss communication. He was not going call the police because they know he is a scam artist. Sadly he is a terrible barber. I have been to El Conde many times this guy was the only problem I ever had. Haircuts are very cheap in the DR and they are very sklled.
