There are three legs to the stool of Republicans: those who like their economic policies (like me) and have a libertarian bent, the defense industry, and the hard core or evangelical Christians. You can say what you want about the last bunch but they are organized, well funded, and have power.

With that last bunch, they want to have as many members as they can in their churches, and they felt like abortion was robbing them of that dream, and they have been hoping to have abortion laws repealed.

So I was happy that the Supreme Court did what it had to do and took down the Roe v. Wade decision because abortion should be addressed by the people and not the judges. OTOH, I knew it would kill us in the elections. Overnight, the Dems were going to get routed in the midterms to not losing the Senate and possibly keeping the house, and I knew why. Every woman I talk to in the 18 to 40 age range has abortion as their #1 issue.

The evangelicals have been pining for government to step in on abortion for so long I do not think they grasped what would happen when they got what they wanted. It is now like, "You guys got what you wanted but now we have much less power than before. " Now maybe they will. I have never thought telling young women they are going to burn in hell for having an abortion was a winning issue. (But I am not sure that telling women they have the right to kill their baby is much better). To me, what these churches need to do is really apply the lessons of Jesus and tell these women they are loved, that we Christians are on your side, and we will do our best to help you make the best decision you can. There is no one size fits all answer for every woman.

I can go against a core Republican position if I think it is wrong. That is not something these dumb Dems can do. They are still hanging onto their moronic energy policies (yeah sun and wind!) while there are rolling blackouts in California and people paying out their nose for energy in Europe. Global warning is real. Sigh. This global warming and climate change crap is every bit as religious as the anti-abortion movement was. Both demand you follow their teachings or suffer an apocalypse.
