Neighborhood stickups are nothing new. As long as guys here are not opening stores I think we will be alright. LOL.

http://youtu.be/2fmKRMz52T4
Good post. I keep telling people the last time I went I felt a change in the barrio I visit a lot. Everyone was telling me to be careful. I did not here that before. I agree be careful at night in Santo Domingo. Military are not on the streets because crime is going down they are there because crime is going up.
guys, i usually stay at the hotel la donae. it is just off independencia. you can walk to the malicone and there are restaurants in every direction. you can walk to the colonial area with ease. the guys that work night are great and you will have no problem. if you just sit at the entrance you will see chicas passing by all night long and all you have to do is flag them down. talk a little and bring them in to have some fun. it is a secure place with tv, hot water, high speed internet, cable tv, a kitchenette where you can cook if you desire. there is coffee in the morning. the price runs from 1000 pesos to 14oo pesos. they have known me for years so i get the 1000 peso rate. they are negotiable.

Notice, no trying to buck the jack and just rolling along; however, Kids probably killed or beaten half to death by now. Don't go where you don't know or invited and follow standard street protocol.
Only increased Military presence has been around infrastructure projects and Tourist Police Car alternating in front of 305 and girls house. Have not stopped anyone under expanded Pandering interpretation (that I saw) but have asked for girls Id's several times. SW presence has actually picked up in Gazue since the announcement from what I can tell especially around the Malecon which is way way odd. I use to see them from the room jutting in and out of side streets but some have taken to walking in front of both the hotel and residences. Only thing my boy warned me about was anyone trying to sell drugs was probably a setup and don't take his car to Boca Chica for any reason.
A lot of you have gotten way to casual in the barrio anyway.

is this the place you are refering to?
All,
I am in the process of planning my first trip to the DR. A friend is telling me that the Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua is a cool place to stay. Do they allow company? Would you recommend staying there?
I came back from Santo Domingo yesterday. I have a couple of interesting stories to share. Some tentative story titles: "Boricuaonline banned from Jaragua","A place like Classicos in Boca Chica" and some others. Reports in a few days.

I always visit my novia's brother in La Victoria when I came last time there were three military check points I passed going and coming to La Victoria. Two on the way and one returning and not near any infrastructure projects. Seen with my own eyes you cannot miss the military check points as they are serious. Two military checkpoints on my way to mega central about a mile before. Again, I would never come on the board and makes things up. Not sure why you would say no increase in military presence when i have written there is you are not going or seeing what i am seeing. Have you driven towards La Victoria a lot shootings in that area. I will take pictures next time to clear that up. Military checkpoints in the capital is not what is needed a lot of police around there it is around the barrios where i am seeing them. Again, I have been to places where I do not advise people to go but my Novia lives in a rough area, but it would be sign of disrespect I feel now not to visit her family in the barrio. Also, not sure it is true, but I was told I have not been targeted because people know who I am. People know when you not from there and i have always been respectful and always treat people with respect. It does not hurt that a lot of the bad guys i have seen in the barrio have come up to me in La Victoria and vice versa and i am always respectful.. I am never casual in the barrio I do not go to any clubs and leave most of the time before it gets late. Already, talk about the drugs in a post before and my visit to La Victoria I seen from my own eyes making those stupid mistakes.
I guess I am the exception to the rule! I just booked with hotwire and got the Jaragua. Booooo. Actually, I know nothing about the place except I lost my shirt in the casino. Fortunately, I only booked for one night. After the first night, we're headed to Bayahibe (sp?). Then back to SD for 2 nights. I'm extremely hesitant about using hotwire again for the 2 final nights as you can understand.
Meanwhile, I'll be renting a car. Prices seemed to be all about the same. I'm so terrified of getting lost, I booked with Hertz but downtown, not at the airport. It's in Mercantil (Jose Maria Heredia). Is that a convenient location? I can always change it to the airport.
I have booked it several times in the past. I know the site details of Palacio. It is the only special deal with 3 and a half. If it is not you still have a good deal on a quality Hotel. I am 95% sure it is the Palacio.
It is a first class hotel. One of the best in the DR. It is not chica friendly. You can checkin with a girl but can not run them in and out. You can use a cabana if you pick some one up. I know a smoking SW I could hook you up with if you are interested.

I hope so, but I won't sweat it over 1 night. It's cheap enough, that's for sure. But they got horrible reviews on tripadvisor. And sure, I'd love to have the info on the SW, though I'll be with someone most of the time. Gracias.

Checkin with your girl and she can spend the night with you no problem. Send her name as a guest with you. I think you picked the wrong option on hotwire. Palacio is the only 3 half star on the no name list. The Mecure which is a good option was priced at $55 on the named hotels with hotwire. Jaraqua is listed as 4 star on hotwire. Jaraqua is very convient The casino disco and several casas in walking distance.

There are several car rental places within the same area, including the Hertz you mentioned. That Hertz is also within walking distance from the Jaragua.
Does this mean you will pay for a taxi to get from the airport to your hotel and then pick up the rental car? No worries about getting lost going from SDQ to the city, it is pretty much a straight shot and there are plenty of road signs. Save yourself the cab fare and pick up from SDQ.
