The reasons may be drugs, minors, unpayed bribes, complaints from neighbours or political showoffs.
Casas getting closed down or moving to a new address happens every now and then.

The background to the Niteroi raid was that the police was investigating the murder of a football player who had sex with two GPs working at the 'Prédio the CEF'.
The police propably knew that there were minors working at the puteiro. They should know as their collegaues were working as security in the casa. ;)

I am newbie to Rio but not a newbie to ISG or mongering. I have read a big chunk of the Rio thread and Bubba's Guide (excellent report BTW; Thanks Bubba).

I have read and been told that the 5-star hotels on Copacabana are not girl friendly at all. My question: Is this policy absoulutely set in stone? I want to use my points at the Marriott for free nights. Is there any way I can bring girls in? Or, as a second option, are there safe ST motels in the area to use at a reasonable price? Is it safe to go to the girls' places or another place that she recommends? I will try the thermas but I do not want to limit myself to just this experience.

OAH[/QUOTE]Most 5 star hotels don't allow girls in but history about the Marriott is that they do. But things can change, what you'll have to do is when you bring your girl in just register her at the front desk and you should be good to go.

Just wondering how loud (music) are the rooms at the termas once you get in? I haven't been to Brazil yet but similar establishments in other countries where it's a bar downstairs and rooms upstairs or in the back don't seem to gel with me if the music is still blasting all the way to the rooms.

Music and noise should not be loud enough to distract you in the major termas. Plus, most of the rooms have their own radio / sound sytem inside, so you can just turn up your own music.

Its that expensive because its an american chain company. A hotel like that here in the states is probably like 160 a night. LOL! Can't wait to get down there again in January

OAH[/QUOTE]I was just there in October, was sitting at the pool with a friend of mine and he got a call from a GDP, she said she was in Copa. He said I am on top of the Marriott why don't you stop by? 15 minutes later she called him from the lobby, he went downstairs and escorted her up to the pool area, nobody asked him a thing, she spent the afternoon with us. She had jeans on, a Morena and works Monday's in Niteroi of all places, so she was no lily white Patrician, yet she got through without question.

A word of warning using the atm's at Banco do Brasil, Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. 749. I just got word from my bank about "irregular" activity on my card. Yep, somehow someone was able to clone it and used it 2 weeks after I left Rio. How do I know where it got cloned? I used my card at this branch only, during the day when the security guy was there, and it was always in my possession. I even physically checked the card readers before using them. Don't know what else I could have done to protect the card.

The clone was used at a "building and materials store". My bank told me Brasil is rated "high risk" for this kind of fraud.
