A taxi costs about 20 Euros. Taxi drivers are generally honest, BUT beware of the hawkers inside the airport area offering you cheap transport, limousine service, etc. Just keep walking and hail your own cap on the pavement outside.

Otherwise, you can go by tram. One of Istanbul's two tram/lightrail lines starts next to the airport terminal. When you get out from the customs area, turn right and continue all the way to the farthest wall. There, you should find an escalator taking you down to the tram station. (They have sometimes closed this access for "security reasons", though, so you may have to get out of the airport buildings first, and then turn right.

The line that starts at the airport terminates in Aksaray (downtown in a working class neighbourhood -- close to the "action" but not so close to most hotels). To go to the centre of the old town, you may change to the other line at Zeytinburnu station. Anyway, here's a map:

This is a "fight over the emperor's beard", for geographically speaking the Turkish border regions with Greece and Bulgaria are in Europe, whereas it's border regions with Syria and Iran are not. (Politically... well, that's another discussion - and not one that we should take on this board.)

However, this thread is about Istanbul, and Istanbul is commonly considered as belonging to Europe, and Aksaray and Taksim are most definitely located on the EUROPEAN side of the Bosphorus.
