Yup, metered, it came to 207 on the meter, plus the regular tolls. There is nothing to fear with respect to arriving in BKK, nothing at all. The only problem is the early bedtime, but I'm guessing that is manageable.

Thanks Barko appreciate the heads up. I am not used to looking for company that early (b4 10:00pm) but I guess will have to make a slight adjustment.

There is one thing that has bothered a lot of people over the last six weeks or so. In watching the crippling six week national paralysis, culminating in a traumatic emotional crackdown, one can't help wonder how it is that the economic infrastructure of the country has remained so remarkably stable. The stock market lost some value, but not anything like what might be expected. And more importantly for falang mongers like us, the Thai currency has remained resolute throughout this period. There was actually a strengthening of the Baht at the midpoint of the conflict, but by the end of the crackdown last week the Baht was back to the expected 32.3-32.5 range to the US dollar. A couple of weeks ago there was some speculation on this board about how that might be - someone suggested that strong-men in the government illicitly control the currency for their own benefit. Well, I found this in a business weekly article about a week before the crack-down (note the subject-verb agreement error in the Japanese currency dealer's quote):
"Losses in the baht may be limited because the central bank controls speculative trading and limits transactions from corporations and investors, according to Tsutomu Soma, a bond and currency dealer at Okasan Securities Co. in Tokyo. The Bank of Thailand sets a daily cap of 300 million baht for trading accounts held by non-residents, such as overseas corporations, funds and banks, for investments in securities and other financial instruments. A similar limit is also set for non-investment accounts.
“The authorities’ way to control speculative trading is working quite well under this kind of conditions,” Soma said. “Still, this kind of violence is definitely negative for the baht and stocks because that will further damage tourism, which is an important sector for their economy.”"
Speaking of which, before I left Bangkok for Pattaya this afternoon, I exchanged dollars at a rate of 32.45. In Pattaya, the best rate I have seen is 31.41. That's a remarkable difference.

The commercial banks give different rates for different values of dollar bills, the highest rate given to 100USD bills.
Note also that the exchange rate fluctuates throughout the day -both up and down -with sometimes more than 5 changes during the day.
