Joking aside any girl if you show vulnerability will ask for money. I have put few girls through school and all of them have serviced me well over the years. I have lived in the Philippines for 20 years now (mostly in Manila but also some time in Davao and in Northern Luzon too) and I can see that some of the advice is ultra-cautious but it might be essential to follow if you're a newbie.

I have also been advised that if a traveller disregards the clear advice given on the websites and something does go wrong, the Embassy can choose to ignore any pleadings for help if they so wish.

You might also need to read the fine print on your health and travel insurance policies too.

My work insurance policy (issued for short-term assignments) always excludes some parts of the Philippines.

So, WRT what FastP says, if you have local knowledge you might be able to "ignore" some advice, but if you're a newbie, you should generally follow it closely.

NEVER believe a girl who says "You can come to my probins; it is very safe here and we will look after you".

Of course it's safe for them, but it may not be for you.

I have a close friend who has been living in Cebu for the past several months, and who has been afflicted with chronic bronchitis almost since his arrival. His doctor there attributes the condition to his riding a small motorcycle and breathing in the exhaust emissions from the congested traffic in that city. He told me today his discovery that cars in this country are not equipped--at least not as a matter of law--with catalytic converters, a technology that's been mandatory in the developed world for about 45 years. Given the general disinterest in public health that pervades the country I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was. It's yet another indication to me of how far out of synch this place really is.

My doctor concluded that it was the tropical humidity that was working in my favor.

So I guess "you win some and you lose some".

OTOH, 4-5 days into my time in phils and I get stomach issues (reflux, ulceritis), probably from the foods associated with travel and phils restaurants. All of that stops a few days after returning to my regular diet when back home.

Filipinas are not the world's shortest. You may want to read the articles that you cite.

1. Aymara women which make up the indigenous population living in the Andes and Altiplano regions of Bolivia, Peru and Chile, are shorter than Filipinas. A casual walk around the street markets of La Paz and Cuzco will confirm this. The young ones can be very cute, but they age quickly and the older they get the wider they get.

2. I don't have stats on this, but my personal impression has always been that Khmer and Lao girls were more petite and shorter than Filipinas too.
