I found out that in Asia they often call you by your name (Mr Robert) rather than by family name (Mr Smith). That means the reception can match room number with name when doing a room # search on their system. I also think the hotels never give out personal info of their guests. Usually the hotel accepts to our somebody through if the request is "I need to talk to mr robert in room 123". If you ask "is mr robert staying in room 123?" or "can you tell me which room mr Robert is?" they will not respond in details, for privacy reasons.
