They been doing that potato chip thing for years now, but recently maybe because those tougher rules at the border they just about always bring those potato chips over whenever you buy a drink for a chica.

It's not really a scam, it's just a bad policy the bar has those meseros do. I use to get really mad a few years back when I would find those chips in my tray, I'd get them and throw them at the waiter and only give him the amount of the drink a and very little tip for doing that, but if it happens now, I just say no thank you and give the chips back, you don't have to pay for them as long as you don't open them. They are just hoping you just go along and pay them the extra $3 dollars for the bag of chips.

Many AB mongers and newbies don't like Tropical because of the heavy Mexican Atmosphere, and loud norteña Mexican cowboy music. But this bar is one of the favorites of the more experience monger. One reason, is you get a lot of fresh off the bus chicas.......The other reason I'm not saying. I'm keeping that secret to myself?

I like the bar cause it's a more toned down bar than like say Ab or HK. the girls don't come up to you or hassle you. It's a place you can relax and sip beer while watching the badly done strip shows.


Papitas can mean both french fries and potato chips. But the correct term for French fries is Papas Fritas.

Decided to take in a Padres game, so I came down a bit early. Got to the border around 3:15, had a pleasant, but slightly chilly, walk to La Zona. Cruised the alley just for fun, then wandered over to Tropical.

I'm warming up to Tropical. The music, for me, really takes some getting used to, but they do have an interesting selection of chicas. Some were pretty scary, but there were a few lookers, from 7 to 9 on the PP scale. And some were FOB.

Great report and glad you are venturing out from HK, AB, CC. I've been a Tropical regular since way before it was posted about on the internet, at least 12 years. Once the Nortena music gets into your blood you are hooked. Although I'm not a great fan of C&W in the US, I tend to lean toward hanging with the country folk in TJ. I love to sit and drink with these small town country chicas in the ficha bars and if you are into dancing it's a buck a dance for some nice tit to tit combat warm up for the arriba.

It appears to be more or less finished, but there is still a tarp between the sections. I understand that they would open it on the weekends.

Yeah, I agree. I'm getting used to the music, but I'm not sure I'm ever gonna love accordians. My biggest beef is that it's too friggin' loud. I have a hard time listening as closely as I need to in order to stumble my way through my SSL (Spanish as Second Language) lessons!

I'm into dancing, but 80% of it has been in US C&W honky-tonks. The rest in SEA discos. So, my bailando Mexicano is a bit weak! :)
