Ho Chi Minh City - General Info

I do not think I have ever seen any really tall girls in HCMC although I know one or two in Hanoi. It may be that you are looking for something that does not exist or is very rare.

As for the massage places I have found that most of the staff will meet you outside so if you do get one you like a deal can be done. The lack of choice is hard to deal with I agree.

HCMC is not a hotbed of commercial sex like the Suk area in BKK and the People's Committee try their best to keep it that way.

One of the upsides of this is that the people are friendly and you are not hassled by touts at every laneway and corner.

But you need patience and a little local guidance can be helpful.

I've been to a few places in the Pham Ngu Lao area and others that give massages, but in every case, it's the same problem. They all have WINDOWS in the doors and you cannot choose your masseuse. Not being able to choose really ruins it for me. I need to pick a girl I like, and I'm rather picky, so 9 times out of 10 I will be disappointed with the assigned masseuse. So I just don't go there. I also regularly look in the various bars in Pham Ngu Lao area, but have never seen any really cute girls who I felt like pursuing.

I've been to Apocalypse Now and there don't seem to be working girls there.

I've been solicited by some girls at the park near the Caravelle, but never saw anyone I liked.

I've had endless motos and cyclos tell me they could get me a girl but I don't trust them. I figure they'll get me a girl and then call the cops so they can get a cut of the resultant bribe.

Just an hour ago I was propositioned by two girls near Pham Ngu Lao, but they were unattractive. Actually, the best looking girls seem to be in the BBS.

I'd love to find some on-premises brothel or something, to avoid dealing with the hotel hassle. Or a real freelancer bar! Do these exist?

What about karaoke? Is that a way to meet some really pretty girls who might be available for more when they're not working? I wonder, can you CHOOSE the girl when you go to a karaoke place, or are you assigned one like in the massage parlors?

Has anyone been in those big karaoke palaces I see on Cao Thang in Dist. 3? From the outside, they almost remind me of Bangkok MPs (wishful thinking!) Wonder what goes on inside. I noticed that some of them have signs that say "Massage."

Are discos worth hanging out in? I went to that new one on Cong Quyen recently, just asked about prices. They said it was $5 for a beer. Is that the usual price in discos here? I could not figure out if they also had a cover charge.

Is there a disco with freelancers here, like New Century in Ha Noi?

A poster recently said go to the popular coffee shops in the afternoon. Hmm. Do you mean places like that chain of cafes, Trung Nguyen? What are the popular coffee shops?

On the other hand, the regular girls on the street are often incredibly appealing, which is why I'm looking for a regular girlfriend. But that's not so easy either. It's very hard to find someone who is tall for a Viet (5 feet one inch just won't do, 5'3" is my minimum requirement), pretty, age appropriate and can speak some English!

So...if anyone could steer me in the right direction I'd be grateful and happily buy you a beer (something I don't do very often. I actually don't like to spend hours hanging out in bars and discos, which may be part of my problem, but will do so if I can just determine which ones to go to.)

I want to take issue with the Editors suggestion that the report by Gumbyy should be added to the Reports of Distinction.

My understanding of the R of D purpose is to provide quicker access to reports that provide valuable information that can be accessed without wading through the 'clutter' of the main thread.

Gumbyy's report is well written and it identifies a numbers of issues regarding HCMC but does not provide any answers, solutions or other positive information. It is a plea for help.

If responses come through that provide clear and useful solution to Gumbyy's issues then they are the reports that should go to R of D.

Incidentally a number of the links in the VN R of D thread are merely pointing to the head of the main thread.

Most girls at the disco or the massage parlor would go out with you for money. They give you the number. But they also give their number to other customers. That means you are not the only person who call the girl late at night. And of course, you may also have more than just a number.

Going to Vietnam is like shopping at the flea market or garage sales. It has the "lucky" element that either frustrates or interests the buyers. If you like to shop at the mall, Vietnam is not your place.

I have met 4 girls so far through Vietsingle, and had messages from many more that didn't turn into meetings. Often they write to you but then their lack of English frustrates them and they don't follow through.

In every case, the girl you meet ends up looking much worse than her picture. I think most of the pictures on Vietsingle are heavily retouched and shot at angles designed to minimize bad features. The first one I met had bad acne that had been photoshopped out of her picture. Another that I met last week, I was very excited about, from her picture. She looked like the kind of youthful white-skinned, ample busted goddess I really go for. But when we met, her skin was about 10 shades darker than in her picture and leathery, she had wrinkles around her eyes, her nose was broader than in the picture, and I was really disappointed. (Somehow she got the impression that I liked her and has been pestering me with SMS messages ever since). She also wrote that she was 36 in her profile but, in person, admitted that she was 42. (I can't condemn her for that, because I'm also lying about my age, but, at least, I look young enough that my lie is credible).

One girl I met through Vietsingle did prove to be attractive, though not as attractive as her picture. After we met, she said she wanted to go out with me the next day, and to meet her at 20:00. Well I was there, and she didn't show up. Then the following day she SMSs me like nothing had happened, and asks "what are you doing?" I said why did you stand me up and she said "Don't angry me. I am sick." Well, I don't suppose I'll ever really understand what that was all about. I would continue to pursue her except that I think she's really not the right type for me. She's 5'3", my minimum height for a girl, but too slight, weighing only 105 pounds. That usually means they have narrow hips, and it will be difficult for them to accommodate a big guy without pain. So now I realize that in addition to a girl being minimum 5'3" she has to have a minimum weight at least 115 or 120 pounds.

As for really tall girls, they don't have to be really tall, just not really short. I can live with 5'3". Even better is 5'5". There are some girls of that height on Vietsingle, but I've not been able to connect with one yet. (incidentally, a major reason I decided to locate in HCMC is because 90% of the girls on Vietsingle seem to be from there. Odd, I don't know why there is not more equal representation of the other provinces.)

I'm actually meeting a tall girl tomorrow who I met on Vietsingle. But it's just a friendly thing, as she's too old. I mean, she's 46 but fairly attractive (at least, in her PICTURE). This is another issue. There's a building there (the northeast side of the intersection, I think) and I saw 4 or 5 girls running out, scantily clad, with 4 or 5 guys. This was at about 5 PM. one girl practically had her blouse off. They ran from the building and then went into an entryway that might have been part of the same building, where there was a stairway. They all ran up the stairway. I'm not sure what that was about, but got the impression that they had all become very horny during a karaoke session or something, and were running up to a bedroom. If anyone can shed some light on what happens in that building I'd love to hear.

I know it would be much easier if I knew tieng viet so I'm trying to learn it but it's hard to devote enough time to study. I plan to live here most of the year so I'd better learn!

By the way, where are the bia oms and cafe oms that I heard so much about? I think I am not clear about just what they are, and how they differ from just a sidewalk cafe. Can anybody recommend some?

Walk right to the end of the disco through 2 doors. pass the staircase to the 2nd floor and u end up at this area. open area with ktv and also sports programs. also has sofa seating along the walls and seating at the bar.

2nd floor
Open area with computer/touch screen games and 2 6ft pool tables. this area overlooks the dance floor of the disco. this area very very very good to see down blouse of all the gers(PRS) hehehehehehehehehehehehehe.

KTV Rooms
In total 5 ktv rooms. wats inside dont know becuase never try. heard that very very nice and comfortable.

I had a bit of trouble sorting this location. HBT is Hai Ba Trung and I think TMK is Nguyen Thi Minh Khai.

I think this is the location of a fancy dance bar called Liquid that I have never been into.

Next time when you are in Vietnam, you can test it for yourself. Like walking into Goi Dau Le Duyen (BBS Le Duyen), and try to tip like from 20K to 50K, they would return your money. If you tip 100K or more, then they would accept it. That is irrational, but they behave like that.

Also curious for more info. [/QUOTE]If based on your analysis, it should be Liquid. Liquid is not a fancy dance bar, rather its just like any other disco in HCMC. Usually catered to the locals and of course there are Working Ladies/freelancers. I think it can be comparable to Rainforest. Never been there before becuase most of the time I hang out on the other side of D1, nicknamed by us as the "Pussy Triangle".

However have heard about it from frends and it dosent really sound that exciting, but since its Friday, might make a trip there tonite to scout the place out.

On a seperate note. If by any chance any of you guys can't pick up any companionship for the night at Liquid, heres another tip;

Wen you walk out of Liquid, turn left into Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street. At the junction turn right and walk upwards towards District 3. Along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, you will encounter HCMC'see infamous Pussy on Wheels, this is where they all are located and they will be riding up and down the street. Soemtimes, they will be just standing along Nguyen Thi Minh Khai waiting to be picked up.

However, do be careful as I am sure some of the horror stories of guys being robbed, etc etc have been posted before.

Never once had my tips rejected be it 50K or 100K. Don't know why it never happend to me before.

Have spent the last hour plus reading through the postings dated from yr 2006 and after and I hope that I can help to answer some queries regarding bringing gers back to your hotel.

Veitnam is still a communist country therfore there are some strict guidelines regarding unmarried couples spending the nite in a room. Not only hotels buit jus to let you know, unmarried couples are not allowed to stay in a room even if its in a residential property.

Most hotels have a curfew of 11pm. meaning that you are not allowed to bring a ger back into your hotel room after 11pm. some hotels have the curfew as early as 9pm. As long as you bring the ger in before this time it is ok. You would still have to register her meaning she has to show her ID card etc etc and than go up with you. She can stay overnite provieded you bring her into your room before the curfew, better in the late afternoon and she stays in the room till the next day. how i know this was becuase i helped to arrange a ger for a friend who was staying in New World Hotel. I walked into the hotel and straight up into my friend's room without any troubles. but this was in the late afternoon about 3pm. please bear in mind that this night not work in the early evening/nite.

Another way to overcome this problem is to pay for another room. This means that one room is registered in her room wnd the other is in your name. whether she sleeps in it they dont care. The reason they want to do it this way is that the hotel can cover their own ass in case of police raids.

This is because a week before the last liberation day celebrations, a very popular "lovers" hotel in Binh Thanh market was raided and about 40 people got arrested. regardless of the fact you are a guy or ger, you will still end up in the police station.

If all else fails, there are alot of mini hotels located on street behind Binh Thanh Market that you can book for an overnite jiggy jiggy. will go scout out the area and try to get as much info as possible.

My best bit of advice is this;

When you check into a hotel. Just ask the receptionist / front desk that you would have a lady friend / ger friend joining you later in the evening and see wat she/he says.

Most importantly, do not explain why you are bringing back different gers every night.

Well, I posted the following followup report six days ago, but somehow it did not get posted:

Well I went walking there again yesterday. Yes, it's the same corner as Liquid. But it was on TMK, not on HBT. In other words, when you walk out of Liquid, go left, then make another left onto TMK. I am not sure if it's the same building as Liquid, or an adjacent building, but the scene I saw was around the corner from Liquid, and it was at 5 PM, when there's nobody in Liquid. So, it wasn't Liquid. Funny, I've been unable to figure out just what I saw, and there doesn't seem to be any karaoke there, unless it's unmarked and hidden.

I did go in Liquid last night for a few minutes. I really hate discos. I hate the deafening music. It was all Viets in groups. I didn't see any pickup possibilities, though a few girls smiled at me, but I think they were with groups of guys. Girls smile at you all the time in VN, I think it usually doesn't mean anything, they are just amused at seeing a foreigner.

I also walked up TMK at about 20:30-21:00, and for the first time I did notice some girls. Most of them were standing on the street, to my surprise. One or two were on motorbikes. I thought I saw a good looking one standing on the street, but passed her by as I wanted to walk up the street further. When I finally returned she was gone.

These girls were mostly not near the Mitsubishi dealer, but several blocks before it.

I also went over the bridge where I heard girls hang out. There weren't any there.

This is interesting, I much prefer girls standing on the street where you have time to get a good close look at them, to zipping by on motorbikes. This being VN, I do wonder, though, if one can be confident that these girls are on the level, and not trying to set you up?
