Schönefeld airport is the original East Germany airport. And most likely it is the best place to still "smell" the East German luxury. The arrivals area has been improved lately. The departure area depends. The area where RyanAir planes leave is not too bad. The area where EasyJet leaves is probably the best place to experience East German luxury. There is no real hall, just an isle. But I never had big problems. Maybe a delay of 45 minutes was the worst that happened. When tired and all seats are taken people sometimes sit on the floor. The airfare compensates a lot.

From there take another long walk to checkpoint Charlie and visit one museum about the wall (there is one just opposite checkpoint). If you have time take the Ubahn to east side gallery as you mentioned. The Reichstag is impressive but you will need time and there is also a queue this time of year.

The basic rate at Artemis has been discussed long and often here. Don't know how you could have missed that. As for the girl, I think I know exactly which one you're talking about.
