Intellectually and philosophically, I understand what you are saying. But I still can't shake the reality-fantasy aspect to my experience in Thailand this month. I suppose it is all about where I feel my life is. I can't imagine a scenario in which I uproot myself from SexPrison USA and move permanently (or semi permanently, as in the case of Fon Tok) to Thailand. So for now, reality, as subjective a misnomer as it may be, is in the USA for me. If my rooted existence in the USA were to change, then I am sure I would see things differently - reality might be flipped. You might say that the sense of reality I feel is itself an illusion. If I lived on a beach my entire life, after a while, I would crave the mountains. If I then moved to the mountains, I would crave the beach. Or the desert. Or Nebraska, who knows. My point is that life *should* be filled with ups and downs. That is how the universe seems to operate, and it is how we seem to derive the greatest pleasure. This is neither positive nor negative, just how human beings are (or perhaps just me) . I think if I lived in BKK full time, I would not appreciate it to the degree I do now, as an occasional voyeuristic pleasure seeker. So while I complain about going 'back to the ho-hum...back to reality', I really think this is a positive thing. When you ask if we really need the other side to life, the harsh side...I would say yes. I would say it is invaluable, for it gives us a frame of reference against which we can judge our experienes. The truly submlime ones.

Turns out that when I do come back to 'reality', I see it very differently. I appreciate some of the finer things (like my own espresso machine in my condo), and I notice some of the less fine things (like attitudes about sex, e.g., opposition to gay marriage). I think I have far more to learn from you on this issue, Angus, than I could teach to you, but in my opinion, the illusion-reality opposition (conjured as it may be) serves a pretty healthy purpose.

It is precisely because the farang life in Thailand is so far departed from his life back home that it appears a fantasy...maybe somewhat akin to the ghetto kid who wakes up one morning to being in the NBA or the extra who finds himself staring in Hollywood. Of course, none of the fantasies are without their costs and ugly truths, but yeah, they are probably a lot better than working in a coal mine or sweat shop x hours per day. Thailand is my home, but i tend to travel a lot, and when i do, it really makes me appreciate what i have at home. At the same time, as earlier mentioned, there are no Rocky Mountains in Thailand, and there are certain experiences that can never be experienced in Thailand. If it is a fantasy, hopefully we just enjoy it and milk it for all it is worth, and try to have a bit of balance in everything we do.

Anyhow I think we all, with one or two exceptions, agree that the sky is not falling. IMHO, the quality (beauty) of the P4P providers is lower nowadays in touristic places (Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui, etc.) because the foreigners are willing to pay big money (by Thai standards) even for girls that are not very attractive. That's also the same phenomenon with the (inflated) "sin sot" paid by certain foreigners.

The local girls are spreading the word and the older (or more knowledgeable) ones in the game explain the situation to the younger "wannabes".

Ten years ago, a below than average looking girl would not have dared trying her luck in the P4P business or would not have hoped to marry a foreigner. But nowadays, it's a known fact among the local girls that some of us (more and more numerous) foreigners can apparently be quite satisfied with women that are not very attractive... So, you have more and more of this kind on the tourist oriented market.

I see soo many foreigners spoiling very unattractive thai girls. And if you read the reports on this board and look at the photo section, you'll see some of the proof of this.

So if foreigners are willing to spend premium prices for "crap" then that is what the market will supply. This is exactly how most of the tourist places are set up in all respects(girls, food, accomadation, transportation).

The thai way = Feed the "crap" to the foreigner and charge him through the nose for it.

I dont agree that it's that bad. There are still quite a few stunners in Cowboy. I don't think that BKK is much cheaper than FKKs (is it still 50 Euros?) 2000 bath, the standard ST fee for stunners is more or less the same as 50 Euros. Of course you can find some freelancers for 1000 but imho not stunners.

On a normal English teachers salary, you will not be able to life the high-live in BKK and barfine in Nana or Cowboy more than once or twice a week.
